From time to time, the world of cinema surprises you with a small, careful and subtle film that wins the favor of the public and critics alike. This was the case, in 2017, with ‘Summer 1993’, the first film by a young director named Carla Simón, who was even chosen to represent us at the Oscars. Now, five years later, the director returns with another story that has already has captivated to everyone who has been able to see it: ‘Alcarràs’. Firm land, beloved home.
The most rural part of Catalonia
On February 15, just a month and a half ago, ‘Alcarràs’ was screened at the Berlinale. Shortly after, it was the first film shot in Catalan to win the Golden Bear: 29 years ago, since ‘La colmena’, Spain had not put Berlin in its pocket. Later, her time at festivals also made her shine it on Malagaeven if out of competition: after the international victory, there was no point in sweeping it.
The film marks a return to the most rural Catalonia, with a drama about the installation of solar panels in a peach plantation, which forces an entire family, from the oldest to the most innocent, to relocate in life during a summer of hard work, joy and worry about the future . In fact, ‘Alcarràs’ could only be shot during that season because it coincided with the peach harvest. There is no doubt that with such care we are facing a peach.
What’s new by Carla Simón will premiere on April 29 and its trailer already anticipates a moving movie, full of love, rural vindication, parties, games and family, with that dose of reality that only non-professional actors can give. And we are already counting the days to enjoy it.
