A new report from the OECD, “Education at a Glance”, tells us about the real time that teachers spend in school, who, together, have to teach 865 hours a year.
The work of teachers is undoubtedly one of the most complex, which became evident after the arrival of the pandemic, especially in those regions where the internet is simply not part of the basic basket.
This year, going back to the classroom has been a challenge for everyone: for the teachers, for the students and for the parents. Of course, this return has not been complete and not in all regions, although the hybrid model is also being adopted.
Be that as it may, the return to classes in 2021 has been framed by those institutions that decided to open the doors of their classrooms to receive both students and teachers.
In this sense, taking into account the daily work of the teachers, the estimated time that they must be in the classrooms is between three and six hours a day, whatever the distribution of that time.
This, however, does not occur in all countries, as there are regions where the work of teachers requires a greater presence in the classroom and, on the contrary, there are countries where time is less.
To mention one example, in Italy, teachers have to spend 941 hours a year on classroom work, almost 80 hours more than OECD countries. However, in Poland, teachers spend almost 200 hours less in classrooms.
With respect to OECD countries, and as shown in the graph above, it is in Costa Rica where teachers spend the most time in classrooms, with a total of 1,134 hours per year.
The second position is occupied by Australia with 1,008 hours per year; In the United States, the time that teachers must spend in schools is 998 hours per year.
Italy, with 941 hours per year, occupies the fourth position, and Canada is located in the fifth position of this Top 10 with a total of 923 hours per year.
