The cereal harvest in Spain will reach 24.47 million tons, 4.38% above the average of the last four seasons and the second best after the impressive harvest obtained last year, which guarantees a good supply, very necessary for the important cereal value chain in our country.
The data correspond to the second harvest estimate made by the Cereal sector of Agro-food Cooperatives of Spain, based on the production obtained in an area of 6.74 million hectares of cereals, of which 84% are from dry land —67% of the total produced in Spain— and the rest, 16%, irrigated.
About 38 million tons of cereals are consumed annually in the Spanish market, around 105,000 tons per day, which, according to this agrarian organization, “means that this deficit between production and consumption makes the role of cooperatives in marketing A fundamental example of this is this start of the campaign, in which the supply of our cooperatives is solving the serious supply problem in the much-needed Spanish ports, guaranteeing the continuous supply of cereals. The cooperatives supply cereal throughout the entire marketing season, during the twelve months – from July 2021 to June 2022 – in quantity and in an orderly manner to the processing industry and are the best instrument for women farmers and farmers obtain better profitability from their productions ”.
Big cereal harvest
The weather is one of the most important factors in the production of cereals, so that the rain, and especially the temperatures, define the final result of the harvest. In general, except in Andalusia, the weather has performed well throughout this season, especially in the final months of the cycle, with humidity and temperatures that have accompanied and favored the completion of the cereal cycle in the field.
To this has been added an adequate management, a greater use of new varieties and a significant increase in certified seed, with new varieties better adapted to water stress and diseases and pests. Research, genetic improvement and new varieties make it possible to improve yields and not have so much dependence on supply, which implies a higher cost and is less sustainable, aspects that are contrary to the green strategy of the CAP, the common European agricultural policy.
