As rumors told us, Apple today presented the new iPad Air 4 with a total redesign based on what we already knew from the iPad Pro, with a screen that occupies the entire area visible from the front. Its screen has a size of 10.9 inches.
What’s interesting about this new iPad Air is that it has an A14 CPU, which is probably (yet to be confirmed) the fastest and most advanced an iOS device has ever had to date. The iPad Pro has an A12Z CPU in its latest version presented a few months ago and curiously the iPad Air now has a CPU that is perhaps faster only a few months later, despite not being the Pro model. It has fewer cores, but it is more modern. It is, without a doubt, a paradox that is difficult to understand. We were all expecting this A14 or at least an A13 on the iPad Pro, but Apple surprised us with a slightly improved version of the A12 years prior.
This new iPad Air has another interesting novelty; The return of Touch ID on a next-gen iOS device with an all-screen design. Now, Touch ID is not in the Home button below the screen because it does not exist, but it is in the power button, as it was leaked in this brochure in its Spanish version a few weeks ago. This opens the door to dreaming of the same improvement, perhaps, one day on an iPhone – or even having Touch ID and also Face ID working simultaneously so that each user can use the one they like the most, which would be the ideal situation.
Returning to the iPad Air, the new Touch ID sensor on the power button is the smallest Apple has designed and allows you to unlock the iPad or make online payments by simply putting your finger on the button. This new iPad Air does not have Face ID but probably many are not going to miss it on this device.
Many colors
Something that is striking is that Apple has decided to give this new iPad Air a much more cheerful look by offering it in five different colors, much more colorful than ever before in any other iPad model.
We can find new colors such as light green, the return of rose gold, the classic silver or space gray and also a light blue.
USB-C port
Another interesting news is that it has a USB-C port, like the iPad Pro, and not a Lightning port, improving data transfer speeds when we connect external hard drives or any other storage device.
Cameras
The front camera of the iPad Air is 7MP, and the rear is the same 12MP camera that the iPad Pro has.
Apple Pencil
The Apple Pencil is of course compatible with this new model and can be magnetically attached to the side just as it does on the iPad Pro. All the new iPadOS 14 regarding handwritten text recognition and other improvements will work from day one on this new iPad Air.
Price and availability
The new iPad Air is considerably cheaper than the iPad Pro despite having a faster CPU, at least for the moment. It costs $ 599 in its 64GB version in the US or € 649 in Spain.
The launch day has not been specified and is simply indicated in October 2020, so we will have to wait a few more weeks to confirm the exact date.
