Banished to the oblivion of a closet in many homes, the salad spinner is a kitchen utensil undervalued but tremendously useful. Admittedly, it is a bit clumsy, but its main problem is that we do not learn to use it well. If you want to enjoy leafy greens and other premium veggies at home, this is almost a must.
There is nothing worse in a salad than withered, moist or mushy lettuce leaves, and the same can be said for herbs, sprouts, fresh spinach or even cabbages and fruits. The fourth range comfort saves us having to deal with this inconvenience, but we already know that they do not always guarantee maximum freshness and, above all, your purchase. it is much more expensive.
How to use (well) the centrifuge
The usual way to wash fresh vegetables is to clean them under tap waterEither holding the product with your hands to rub between sheets and nooks, either over a strainer or in a bowl. Once you have finished with the dirt and most of the water has been drained, the normal thing is to go to the centrifuge to eliminate the maximum of remaining moisture.
But this article from the American publication Cook’s Illustrated it opened our eyes in the way of using this utensil, and we confess that it is so obvious that now we cannot understand how we did it wrong until now. Or not exactly bad, but not with the necessary efficiency.
The correct method begins by placing the vegetables inside the appliance basket, which in turn must be properly placed on the base container of the appliance. Next you have to fill it with clean water, so that the vegetables are almost covered with liquid.
This is when you have to gently stir and shake the leaves with your hands, in the water, to remove the dirt. Then we will have to extract the basket, throw away the dirty water and repeat the same process as many times as necessary until that water stops coming out with dirt.
You never have to drain the water without removing the basket, because in this way we would be returning the dirt through the vegetables that we want to clean, and we would enter an endless cleaning loop.
You already clean the vegetables or leaves, yes we can centrifuge them according to the mechanism offered by our device. And remember that if we find it cumbersome or uncomfortable to use, perhaps we do not have a reliable model; It is not very advisable to rely on a product of dubious manufacture and flimsy materials. The design and quality are noticeable.
