The exchange rate was quoted at 17.3591 per dollar, with a marginal loss of 0.01% against the Reuters reference price on Wednesday.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits in the United States increased 28,000, to a seasonally adjusted 261,000, in the week ending June 3, the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 235,000. This news sent the dollar back against most currencies. The dollar index, which measures the currency against six others, fell 0.48% this morning.
“For the rest of the day, the exchange rate could fluctuate between 17.30 pesos and 17.45 pesos per spot dollar,” Ci Banco analysts said in a note sent to clients.
An inflation report from Mexico for May also adds strength to the currency, showing a decline in the index of consumer price increases to 5.84% year-on-year from 6.25% previously. The underlying yielded 7.39% from the previous level of 7.67%.
During the session, the exchange rate is expected to trade between 17.34 and 17.45 pesos per dollar, Banco Base estimated.
