What would urban music be without a good beef from time to time? The salseo of the week is on account, on this occasion, of Residente and J Balvin. And it is that, in a session of the former with the Argentine producer Bizarrap, the Puerto Rican lashes out at the Colombian reggaeton player accusing him of being racist, privileged and not writing his lyrics.
Although the confrontation between the two artists began a few months ago, it has been now that the enmity seems to have reached its peak. It was with the publication of Session 49, an eight-minute song in which Residente dedicates the singer of Ginza niceties such as: “For two minutes of song they have twenty writerseven the managers are composers”, “he does not understand the values of life, he has to tattoo the word ‘loyalty’ because he forgets it” or “the people fighting, they are being killed, and the guy uploads photos of Gandhi praying” .
The song accumulated 16 million views on YouTube in the first 12 hours and, at the time of writing these lines, now exceeds 49 million.
The origins of beef between Residente and J Balvin
It all started in September of last year when J Balvin attacked the Latin Grammys, in which he was nominated for three awards considered “minor”. “The Grammys don’t value us, but they need us. We give them rating, but they don’t give us respect. Those who have power in the genre, none should go, that is, everyone, because we are a movement, ”said the reggaeton player.
These awards, which were created in 2000 to address the lack of Latin rhythms in the original edition, were then criticized by the Colombian because reggaeton does not have its own category and competes as urban music alongside rap and trap.
Balvin currently has five Grammys and all of them from the urban subcategory. René, who has accumulated 31 of these awards, replied: “I would believe you about the boycott if, I don’t know, last year when you were nominated 13 times you hadn’t gone. But there you did not ask for a boycott. Surely you even had a change of clothes for each prize. But as of the 13 nominations you won only one Grammy, now the boycott returns.
“You have to understand that it’s like a shopping cart hot dog be upset because you can’t earn a Michelin star. And don’t get me wrong, José, your music is like a shopping cart. hot dog, everyone likes it, but when people want to eat well they go to a restaurant, which are the ones that win Michelin stars“, René continued. A metaphor that has been used later by J Balvin himself to launch merchandise and to which Residente alludes again in the Bizarrap session: “Today I skin you so that those who buy the shirt of the hot dog feel good assholes.”
Love and affection

In addition, Residente has denounced on Instagram that J Balvin tried to stop the publication of Session 49: “It turns out that the asshole found out that I’m throwing him and he hasn’t stopped calling everyone to call me so I don’t bring it up. They threatened to sue my label if I took it down.” And finish: “The difference between you and me is that I am free to do whatever comes out of the balls and you are just another slave in the industry”. At the moment, the only response that the Colombian would have given would be a tweet on his account in which he said: “Love and affection.”
