With the increasing number of smartphones and the increase in their functions, we have seen how they have become an essential tool for most of us. Precisely due to the use of these devices designed to be used vertically, we have seen the need to enjoy vertical content, unlike the horizontal that we normally find on any platform. We talk about videos from YouTube, Instagram, etc. Google could have the solution to that with AutoFlip.
It is true that Instagram has already opted for the vertical format at the beginning of IGTV, but shortly thereafter, it broke this essence by allowing horizontal videos. A vertical video is 100% designed to be consumed in our phones , because it allows us to use only one hand to use it and not have to turn its screen, something comfortable if we go on a public transport, for example. This could end if Google decides to implement AutoFlip on different platforms.
AutoFlip adapts any video for vertical screens
As we have read in 9to5Google, they are developing a tool called AutoFlip, based on artificial intelligence to adapt any video to other formats, including vertical, without losing too much information. Doing this work manually would take a lot of time and if we focused on showing only the central part of the video, we would lose important information. For this reason, Google AutoFlip will be able to detect the protagonist or the most important thing in the scene to capture that on the vertical screen.
This new tool, if you get results as good as we see in the GIFs that accompany these lyrics, would serve, for example, to adapt any YouTube video to vertical format. Undoubtedly, we find it very interesting, that although we will continue to lose information against what a horizontal video offers us, it is a clear improvement to enjoy multimedia content on our smartphone. However, it is quite obvious that this format adaptation will not work equally well for any type of video.
The vertical format, whether we like it or not, is part of the future of the content we will consume, so much so that even Netflix is working on the first film entirely in this format, precisely adapted to be consumed in our mobile phones. If Google gets AutoFlip to work correctly, what services would you like to see this tool in? We already have YouTube listed, but what about you?
