Impression, fear, vertigo or tranquility are some of the emotions who can convey this suspended house, literally on a cliff in Mendocino, California. But it is not about choosing between these emotions. From its imposing rear entrance and throughout its route, it is designed to transmit all of them to us.
The Iranian architect Milad Eshtiyaghi and his studio are responsible for this impressive design with which they challenge the limits of architecture. For its execution, engineering resources have been used to make possible its difficult location.
In the study they had the edge of the cliff as a terrain, so when designing the house, they decided separate the house from the land so that it would remain suspended in the air.
Their structure and support points they are like those of a bridge with steel cables of different positions and forces to ensure that the house, in addition to holding up, adequately withstands inclement weather such as strong winds. Also due to the weather, a marked inclination was chosen in the planes of its roof.
The structure and support points
A large mast serves as support for the entire structure, which was secured with two categories of cable. The tall cables support the weight of physical and the Bottom cables support lateral and upward wind forces.
They designed the mast of the project inclined towards the opposite side of the house for aesthetic reasons – it separates more from the structure of the house – and physical reasons, because it increases stability.
In the bottom of the house, they created a path that leads to a space to sit and relax, and a part to play that is an impressive swing (not suitable for those with vertigo). Whoever wants to try it will experience a sensation of liberation, weightlessness and floating in the air.
The lightness of the bridge design and its design (glass) makes it a slippery bridge, leading to fear and excitement on the way to the final space. But finally, at the end of the journey, the peace and stability of a structure will be reached in which the firmness provided by the cables that intersect to keep it firm can be appreciated.
Home
The house has been designed for a couple. For this reason, it only has a bedroom, the living room and a work study in the south side from where the views to infinity are appreciated, while on the north side are located the living room, the kitchen and the dining room, which overlooks the east and west views.
In this house, sights are on the ground so all the spaces have a fixed window on the floor (a part of the floor is glass) so that all the spaces participate in the show.
In the interior, black and wood have been chosen, as in the exterior. The Black from the entrance adds drama and only the inclined plane of the mast can be seen as you get closer in which a small door of access to the unknown and unexpected.
In the rest of the rooms, black and wood they give rise to elegant rooms in which the light and the landscape filter through several planes.
A house of course designed by and for the brave and for those who want their home to be an experience.
Come and see…
