At 08:46 this Tuesday there was a brief earthquake that was felt in various parts of Mexico City, whose epicenter was in the same capital of the country and that due to its short durationthe seismic alert was not activated.
The National Seismological Service (SSM) reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 1.5 with an epicenter 3 kilometers southwest of Coyoacán, south of Mexico City.
Several inhabitants to the west and south of the capital, as in the colonies Naples, Mixcoac and San Angel, They reported that the quake was felt very briefly, but as if it had been a strong jolt.
For its part, SkyAlert also indicated that the earthquake was of low magnitude, but was perceived as a strong “pull” or vibration. The epicenter would have been in the Insurgentes and Copilco area
The mayor of Benito Juárez, Santiago Taboada, said that civil protection and security teams made tours in the demarcation, without any news of damage or injuries.
So far no damage or injuries have been reported in the rest of the city from the quake.
Why didn’t the seismic alert sound?
SkyAlert explained that a basic premise of seismic alerts is that “the alert time depends on the distance to the epicenter,” which is why the epicenters have 0 seconds in advance of the earthquake.
He also indicated that earthquakes like today’s, of very low magnitude, they also have very short radii of perceptionso that in areas where they could have time in advance, there would no longer be any perception.
He added that the seismicity in Mexico City is attributed to the existence of faults (as is the case with these earthquakes), also due to surface tensions accumulated over decades or centuries and, in some cases (less frequent), to the overexploitation of aquifers, especially in delegations such as Tláhuac, Xochimilco, Iztapalapa, Cuauhtémoc and Gustavo A. Madero; The absence of water causes the subsoil to collapse and sink, thus generating small movements of the ground (earthquakes).
There are some smaller geological faults within the country’s capital.
