Identified as Daniel Jenkins, 22, of Dallas, pleaded guilty last June to the charge of conspiracy to commit crimes among which he is accused are: kidnapping, carjacking, a hate crime charge. He also has a charge of using a firearm during one of his violent robberies, the Justice Department said in a statement.
Jenkins was the fourth consigned in a group of young men sentenced for the conspiracy using Grindr, a dating app used primarily by gay men.
“This defendant targeted innocent victims for violent crimes simply because he believed they were homosexual.“reads the statement from Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke, of the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division.
“It underlines the commitment of the Department of Justice to aggressively prosecute crimes motivated by prejudice, including crimes against people of the LGBT community,” Clarke emphasized in reference to the intentions of this young man and the other three implicated, reported The New York Times.
According to the Justice Department, the group initiated this plan in December 2017, Jenkins and another conspirator created profiles on Grindr to lure the men to places where they were mugged.
At the beginning of December 2017, they summoned a group of men at a certain point and at gunpoint forced one of them to drive to an ATM to withdraw money from their accounts, the Dallas Department of Justice detailed.
The same mobile was repeated by the group days later that same month.. Jenkins admitted that they summoned them to a housing unit and when robbing them threatened with a pistol, they wounded one of them and assaulted the others.
Jenkins told investigators that members of his group used homosexual slurs and taunted the victims and that a member attempted to sexually assault one of the victims, the Justice Department said.
In Mexico crimes of this type have been reported in which they are contacted by men through this application and after supplying them with a powerful drug, they fall asleep and are robbed at home and even suffer sexual violence when they are unconscious. However, the results of the authorities have failed to have any detainees.
