In an interview, Momoa states that in Aquaman 2 there will be a speech about the consequences of climate change.
Aquaman is a superhero film, based on the DC Comics character of the same name and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.. This sixth installment of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) -under the direction of James Wan- focuses on the story of Aquaman, Arthur Curry, the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, while his mission is to fight against King Orm -his half-brother – to be able to lead a contest that seeks to unite the seven underwater kingdoms against the surface world.
The film broke a record by grossing $1.15 billion. and despite receiving mixed reviews (praise for the direction and special effects and, on the contrary, negative reviews for the complicated plot and dialogue), it was generally well received by the public. Thus, in view of the box office success, the franchise has decided to work on the sequel that is scheduled for 2023.
In the sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Momoa will play the marine hero, while Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will return to play Mera, Orm Marius/Ocean Master and David Kane/Black Manta, respectively.
Additionally, there would be new additions including Jani Zhao as Stingray, Indya Moore as Karshon, and Pilou Asbæk. And the news about the project does not end there, since, recently, Momoa revealed that Ben Affleck will play Batman in Aquaman 2. But so far there are not many details about the plot of the film, although some promos show territories with some mythical creatures.
The details about Aquaman 2, according to Momoa
As we mentioned earlier, Momoa has revealed some details about the sequel. In an interview with GQ magazine, the actor confirmed that the film will include a scene in which Arthur appears before the UN Assembly and delivers an impressive speech about a catastrophe that will affect the entire world. In addition, he also commented that the real-world environmental issue and current damages will be addressed in the film. While he didn’t say so outright, it looks like climate change concerns will weigh heavily in the film. In Momoa’s words:
“Aquaman is the funniest superhero in the world. But it’s amazing to be able to raise awareness about what’s happening to our planet. It’s not a story that’s been told over and over again, [es una] film about what is happening right now but in a fantasy world.
I have a great time with… there’s a lot of… It’s a throwback to… I don’t want to give away too much. But we really managed to speed up what’s going to happen to this earth, and it’s not because of the aliens.”
Of course, Arthur’s scene will be quite significant within the plot, being a representation of what is really happening in the world, as well as an indirect connection with its predecessor.
In the first film, Orm’s argument was difficult to contradict, since the surface world has taken it upon himself to destroy the oceans and destroy everything in their path. So, Despite the fact that Arthur had to prevent Orm’s invasion, it is likely that in Aquaman 2, the King of Atlantis will have to face those responsible for all this environmental disaster on his own.. Otherwise, things will get worse and put the marine life of the seven kingdoms at risk.
Judging by Moma’s words, it seems that in the story there will be an epic confrontation between the sea and the surface. In fact, there has been speculation about this war since the images of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom showed the Atlanteans gathered on a beach. So the idea of a speech focused on the consequences of climate change that threatens the world has only confirmed suspicions. Now it remains to be seen if and with whom this disaster will lead Arthur to a certain war. And, considering Affleck will be attached to the sequel, probably the film is inspired by the events of Batman, in a kind of conflict with the Navy and the Government of the United States, due to its scant involvement in environmental issues. Even the message of the film could be simply focused on the implications of the threats that pollution brings. Either way, it’s quite interesting that Aquaman 2 isn’t focused solely on superhero and villain issues and takes its plot to a very important real level.
