filtration of Grand Theft Auto VI has become one of the most infamous moments in the video game industry in recent years. Although it seems that everything has already been discussed in relation to this topic, it remains to be seen what will happen within Rockstar after this security breach. Thus, some anonymous developers have given their opinion regarding the consequences of this information leak.
Recently, 3DJuegos interviewed several developers from Europe, who have remained anonymous, to talk about the consequences that this leak will have on Rockstar. To begin with, it has been mentioned that NDAs, confidentiality agreements, and remote security methods can be tightened:
“It is impossible to avoid possible leaks… for this, it would be necessary to check emails, search people before leaving and all of that is attentive to people’s freedom.
In my experience, the PCs where I work are controlled, you can’t install programs that aren’t authorized, there are all kinds of antivirus, when you open a link there’s like a program that tracks the website you go to… it’s all quite covered, but of course , leaks can always happen if the employee, I don’t know, if he starts recording the screen with a phone or copies small files from here to there”.
However, one of the worst cases that can happen is that the leaked source code is copyrighted by someone outside of Rockstar, and the company no longer has the opportunity to use the very tools it came to create. This was what was said about it:
“Imagine the source code ends up in other games. Imagine that these games are patented before, since in the United States the software can be patented, and they start suing Rockstar for their own source code. It is something that may sound very ridiculous, but it has already happened.
Although everything is speculation, the best scenario in the present situation would be that the situation remains an anecdote, that people forget it and Rockstar releases its super trailer and confirms what we all know: that it be compared with what was leaked and it is confirmed that everything looks much better, because I assure you that everything is going to look much better. The worst case scenario? That there are consequences that affect the development, which implies delays and frustration on the part of the user, which implies storms in social networks, which implies changes in the direction or the creative process of the game, which implies changes in the process of commercialization of the project, which implies unimaginable consequences, for what comes out worse and later”.
At the end of the day, it is clear that this leak does not have a single benefit, either for the player, but especially for Rockstar. Although at first glance it may seem as if this does not have a great impact, especially considering the company’s statement, anonymous developers have pointed out that this affects the company:
“In Rockstar there will be disappointments, suffering and the occasional dismissal. The thing is, your confidentiality agreement means you can’t divulge anything except through official channels. It is not just to ensure that marketing takes control of communication, it is a very serious matter that can blow up in your face. If you have a very clear vision of the game and you put out half-done images, people judge them as final material. In a commercial product with billions of investment it can be a very negative impact. People can have two fingers of forehead, but the mass does not. Everything is magnified and it can become a very serious mistake.”
For now, Rockstar has indicated that the leak will not affect the development of GTA VI. However, nothing assures us that internally the statement is different. NDAs prevent employees from talking about this topic. We can only wait and see how this situation develops. In related topics, various developers have revealed what their games looked like before we got our hands on them. Similarly, the FBI is already investigating this case.
Editor’s Note:
In case of GTA VI it’s a pretty interesting one. Not for nothing is this the biggest leak in the industry since The Last of Us Part II. While there is a chance that Rockstar’s statement is true, and the leak has no development consequences, there is still a chance that the way the company works will change substantially.
