The increasingly popular website Taste Atlas has recently shared the updated list of the best snacks or sandwiches from around the world, highlighting the top 50 one of the best valued by its users. Only two Spaniards have slipped into this ranking, although we have to go down to the position number 22 to find the first national sandwich. And it is not difficult to guess what it can be.
The list, headed by tombik Turk, does not get rid of the critics in social networks, since hardly anyone is usually happy when it comes to choosing the best in something, or establishing an order of quality in supposedly absolute terms. Like the prizes and any contest, everything obeys specific criteria that we have to accept and value as we see fit.
What is Taste Atlas?
The interesting thing about the lists of Taste Atlas is that it is a collaborative web page that aims to create a kind of Wikipedia of eating -and drink-. A kind of virtual atlas or catalog with information on the typical dishes and products of each country, classifying them under different types and offering some information on their origin, recipes, tradition, ingredients, etc.
The idea is that each user can add new entries that are not there, add data and content to the existing ones, and, most attractively, vote for what you have already tried. In this way, the web periodically prepares rankings with the best or worst voted foods and drinks.
The motto of the portal, Travel Global, Eat Local, makes its philosophy clear: to encourage traveling around the world and trying the local cuisine from every corner. It is a celebration of gastronomic diversity and richness of our planet, an inseparable pillar of the history, culture and life of the people of each place. That is why users, who can register for free, are supposed to collaborate by voting freely. sincere and honest. It is assumed.
The best sandwiches in the world

Thus, one of the lists that most often gives rise to talk is that of the beloved and universal sandwich, the entrepán, sandwich or sandwich, which also includes other elaborations of dough with fillings diverse as arepas, open toasts or bagels.

Precisely the best valued sandwich, with 4.7 points out of 5, is really a type of doner kebab. Is called tombik either gobitmeans something like “chubby” and is characterized by the type of dough that houses the filling. The tombik is more of a sandwich than the doner typical, as it is served in a kind of bun or round bun with a tender crumb, almost like a hamburger bun. The filling is usually the usual: lettuce, onion, tomato, döner type meat, sauce, other vegetables, etc.
In second and third place, closing the podium of honor, two Latin American entrepanes make their appearance with the same score, 4.6: the peruvian butifarrawhich has nothing to do with our sausage, and the generous Argentinian tenderloin sandwich.

In its most traditional form, the butifarra consists of a round rustic roll called a rosette -because of the flower shape of the crust- with country ham (cooked and marinated pork leg meat), lettuce, criolla sauce (with purple onion), radishes and fresh chili. The Argentinian tenderloin sandwich is usually a lot more forcefulwith more elongated bread, tenderloin meat, lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese, cooked ham, mayonnaise, fried egg and chimichurri.
The first Spaniard on the list is, indeed, the ham sandwichin position number 22, tying with 4.3 points with others such as reuben American or the croque-monsieur French, and also with the next one, the calamari sandwichwhich occupies position 27. There are only two vegetarians, the vada pav Indian, in 13th place, and the already somewhat exploited avocado toast or avocado toast, at number 44.

Little can be said against a good quality ham sandwich with good bread, extra virgin olive oil and tomato, although in Taste Atlas They emphasize that it can also carry ingredients such as garlic, piquillo peppers, black olives and Manchego cheese. What may surprise you the most is the presence of the calamari sandwich; to be famous in Madrid it gives us a clue about the knowledge that is out there about our sandwich culture.
