It seems that the saga has an expiration date on PlayStation.
One of the biggest soap operas that we are experiencing in recent months is that of the situation of Call of Duty after the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft, since the latter would mean that the American company would be the one to decide on which platforms the famous war license would be available, this being where PlayStation comes into play, since, after losing multiplatforms such as Starfield and Skyrim, it seems that Call of Duty would be next.
Given this, it must be said that in the past Phil Spencer has stated that they will respect the previous agreements, so, at least initially, Call of Duty will continue to be cross-platform and coming out on PlayStation consoles. Or at least that was what many of us thought, since it seems that this promise has an expiration date.
Three more years of Call of Duty on PlayStation
According to a recent interview with Jim Ryan, CEO of PlayStation, with Games Industry, the manager affirms that Call of Duty games will continue to come out on PlayStation for three years beyond the current agreement that runs until 2023, which would be equivalent to having games in the saga until 2025-2026, this being the reason why Sony claims company purchase is inappropriate.
It is the latter that is raising quite a few blisters, since Sony is being Microsoft’s main obstacle with the many international organizations that they have to approve the purchase of Activision Blizzard for a value of 69,000 million dollars, currently being those of the United Kingdom that are regulating the situation.
Given this, Microsoft has claimed that it has offered a deal to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation for several more years, even though in this same interview Jim Ryan has made it known that this period is three years, being something that he classifies as inadequatewithout taking into account the impact this would have on PlayStation players.
Obviously this situation would be more of a headache for PlayStation itself than for players, who could choose to get an Xbox Series, especially now that PlayStation 5 has risen in price.
