Can you imagine that an android is after you to use a mask? Well, reality has surpassed fiction and Pepper is a clear example of this.
The coronavirus pandemic has led to humanity experiencing an authentic technological evolution.
Business and relationships have had to adapt to digital tools to continue their course due to confinement and social isolation.
In 2020, technology has had to be catalyzed in biblical proportions, a breakthrough that was forecast for a range of five more years. Even robotics has gained great relevance in the course of this period.
Pepper, the robot that detects if you don’t have a mask
The mask has become one of the most important sanitary measures to contain the spread of the disease.
The problem is that there are a few irresponsible people who walk down the street without this accessory, exposing others and, under that logic, Pepper arrives, an android capable of detecting people who do not wear their mask to gently remind them that they should use it.
After more than half a year since humanity has faced the coronavirus pandemic, there are still people who refuse to believe in the existence of the disease and in the importance of following the health safety measures recommended by health authorities.
In countries such as Spain and Belgium, there have been demonstrations against the use of masks or face masks, as a health security measure that prevents the spread of the virus.
However, the use of a mask is mandatory in most countries to enter places of concentration such as airports, shopping centers, restaurants, cinemas, hospitals, shops, museums, among others.
Taking this into account, a group of scientists from the SoftBank Robotics company created Pepper, whose mission is to remind people not to stop using the mask.
The android, barely 1.20 meters tall, is equipped with a camera that allows it to scan people around it.
If Pepper discovers an uncovered face, she will pronounce the phrase: “You must always wear a mask correctly.”
According to Jonathan Boiria, European sales manager for Softbank Robotics, the idea of this android is not to enforce or control that people wear the mask, but to provide a friendly reminder.
Pepper is already working in some European countries and you can see how it has been implemented below:
