Although the ceremony has yet to start, this year the awards in certain categories are awarded before the gala officially begins. Among the more technical categories, this year’s winner has already been revealed Best animated short film: the Spanish short ‘The wiper’
A great victory for Spanish animation
There is already a trickle of early winners, and in some awards with several Spanish nominees we have already been delighted. ‘The Windshield Wiper’ Alberto Mielgo and Leo Sanchez positioned itself as one of the most interesting bets in the animated short film category, with a very stylized CGI animation and an interesting reflection on the nature of love.

Mielgo has a long career in the animation industry, although he made his directorial debut with ‘Love, Death & Robots’. It is the first time that the Spanish director aspired to an Oscar, that he finally takes home this co-production between -PINKMANTV- and Leo Sanchez Studio.
In addition to ‘windshield wiper‘, also competing in this category were the short films ‘Boxballet’ by Anton Dyakov, ‘Affairs of the Art’ by Joanna Quinn and Les Mills, ‘Bestia’ by Hugo Covarrubias, and ‘Robin Robin’ by Dan Ojari and Mikey Please.
“[La nominación a los Óscar] it changes your life. You generate more credibility and you have a greater cache,” Mielgo told Efe tonight as he passed through the red carpet. “I don’t want to imagine what it would mean to win it.”
Mielgo also said that he would improvise his speech because he is not good at memorizing texts, but that he would celebrate with the whole team. Although he did not seem to be very sure, in the end the director and ‘The wiper’ have opened the night in a spectacular way.
