the chinese manufacturer Xpeng Motors specialized in 100% electric cars has launched an ambitious product offensive with which to become a true global brand. The new Xpeng P5 is ready to start its assault on European territory. However, and as the arrival of this model materializes, the company focuses most of its efforts on completing the development process of its new SUV, the Xpeng G9.
At the end of last year, within the framework of the Guangzhou Motor Show, the Xpeng’s new electric SUV. An SUV of considerable size and that is called to play a leading role in the roadmap established by the brand. Totally unexpectedly, the G9 has been photographed in full testing session. That’s right, its development is not over yet. And what is more important, the sighting has taken place in Spain.
Spy photos of the new Xpeng G9
A prototype of the new Xpeng SUV has been hunted in broad daylight while driving on Spanish roads. Despite all the camouflage used by the manufacturer, there is no room for doubt. We are facing the new G9. It is more, the optical groups are practically uncovered and the lateral silhouette is unmistakable. This sighting highlights the main objective with which this model has been brought to life.
Xpeng, during the presentation of the new G9 in China, made it clear that we were facing a global vehicle. An SUV designed not only taking into account the demands of the Chinese public. That is why, to a certain extent, the sighting of a test unit so far from the brand’s home country should not surprise us. The G9 will eventually come to Europe.
The production version of the G9 will debut later this year and, a priori, there will be no changes abroad. However, it is not ruled out that the company chooses to make some modification to the technological equipment or the propulsion system. It is supported by the Edward platform, an architecture dedicated to large electric vehicles. And despite its size, Xpeng’s plans do not include, for the time being, the marketing of six or seven-seat versions. It will be available in a five-seater version.
The autonomy of the new Xpeng G9
Xpeng hasn’t officially released many details about the G9’s powertrain. What has been confirmed is that it will be the first Chinese serial production car based on the 800 volt high voltage SiC platform. The batteries will have IP68 protection level and will equip the XPower 3.0 energy system. This technology will allow a range of up to 200 kilometers to be obtained in just 5 minutes of charging.
The battery will have a capacity of approximately 100 kWh and its main objective will be to feed two motors, one per axis. Therefore, the new G9 will boast all-wheel drive. The power will far exceed the barrier of 400 hp and autonomy is expected to exceed 500 kilometers.
Release date of the new Xpeng G9
When will it hit the market? The production version of the G9 was scheduled to debut at the 2022 Beijing Motor Show. However, this event has been postponed due to a major coronavirus outbreak. The company itself commented in a statement “see you in June”, which hints at a possible summer debut. The order book was expected to open in parallel with its run at the Shanghai event, now it’s unclear what will happen.
In any case, deliveries will start in China sometime in the fourth quarter of this year. To see it in Europe we will have to wait until 2023. And although it is unknown what its price will be in the Chinese market, various local media suggest that, once discounts and subsidies have been applied, it will be below the €40,000 barrier. Among its main competitors will be the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Tesla Model Y.
