Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda are about to enter a dangerous game in which, for the first time, SEAT is free. The Spanish, which does not have representation in segment D, is exempt while the two Germans and the Czech play it by betting only on family models.
The new strategy implemented by those from Wolfsburg in segment D is unprecedented. Audi, Volkswagen Y Skoda have renounced the models with sedan bodywork that represent the respective brands in the D segment. The three have decided to remain in this category of the market, but strictly with family bodiesexcept last minute surprise.
The three-volume sedans have been disappearing, while others have decided to extend their life cycle knowing that the competition has been renewed and they acquire a greater technological load that leaves them at a clear disadvantage. Among the generalists, the Passat has become extinct and the Skoda Superb looks like it will toobecause despite having seen very discreetly a mule of the next generation of this model -at the end of last spring- two prototypes of the Superb Combi have quickly been seen.
Master move or bump in the making from Audi, Volkswagen and Skoda?
The Passat Variant has almost accumulated a year of development, and the three volumes will not do so because the manufacturer has canceled it and publicly pointed it out, a case very similar to that of the Audi A4 Avant that has been seen for a long time camouflaged, even also in the S and mule versions of the new RS. The only difference between the two is that the one with the four rings is silent on the A4.
Three key models that give up a classic sedan, but do not do so in the category while retaining the family option. While it is true that this type of body is more practical and versatile, and highly demanded in central and northern European countries, they do not even come close to the figures that SUVs manage. A type of model that is really sweeping and that the three brands are constantly renewing, because they know that they are a real gold mine for sales.
The big problem for Audi, Volkswagen and Skoda in betting only on relatives is if the strategy will not turn into a loss of the investment made, a headache that the first two are more likely to compensate if they decide to export the new A4 Avant and Passat Variant to the United States. A market in which the Skoda Superb Combi is not present, and who can dig the grave ahead of time. This time, SEAT will be spared any reprimand if the crash occurs.
