Avatar: The Path of Water is nothing to reach the movie theaters, in the midst of many doubts and pressures. His arrival will happen thirteen years after the first. It will also mean the first film that James Cameron releases in the same period of time. Which of course arouses some expectation in the industry and even some skepticism. Let’s remember that Avatar remains the highest-grossing film of all time to this day, so some seriously doubt the streak will repeat itself.
However, Cameron doesn’t really care about those results and marks. The reason why he has returned to the ring is because he has a story to tell. So much so that he extends it to a saga of five films (or more) that will only happen, depending on the impact the upcoming sequel has on the public.
Does the audience even remember the names of the characters?
James Cameron spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the bets that come with the premiere of Avatar: The Path of Water. Especially about those challenges to overcome and the many doubts that exist around the project. The director claims that his franchise has many skeptics who even wonder if the 2009 film even had a cultural impact.
“There’s skepticism in the market around, ‘Oh, did it make any real cultural impact? Can anyone even remember the names of the characters?’ If people are less likely to remember Jake Sully than, say, Luke Skywalker, that’s partly because Avatar it only takes one movie into its mythology,” says Cameron. «When you have extraordinary success, you come back in the next three years. This is how the industry works. You go back to the well and build that culture impact over time. Marvel took maybe 26 movies to build a universe with the characters intersecting. So it’s an irrelevant argument. We’ll see what happens after this movie.”
But the sequel to Avatar it also faces the weight of its predecessor. The first film hit theaters on a monstrous budget and was designed with state-of-the-art equipment that was built especially for the occasion. The result was a majestic 3D cinematic experience that was later overused by that more ambitious Hollywood face.
Of course the efforts were worth it because the film became a box office hit. Until now Avatar it retains its position as the highest grossing film in history with just under 3 billion dollars raised. The mark has only managed to be reached by very little difference by avengers endgame, another film with a certain “cultural impact”. Perhaps Avatar: the path of water Will you have enough to reach it?
“I was actually the one who put on the brakes and said, ‘I don’t know if I want to go down this road again,'” Cameron explains of box office expectations. “Because of the tremendous performance of the original, we literally had to be in the top five grossing movies of all time to be successful. It’s an absurd goal.”
Therefore, Cameron is not tormented by the result that his long-awaited sequel may have. Although he has previously stated that it will depend on whether the planned continuations can be carried out.
The director has already filmed avatar 3 which will hit theaters in 2024 and a portion of avatar 4 (2026). the script of avatar 5 It is also in its final version. Now all that remains is to review the success of the sequel to see if his film dream can be fulfilled. Avatar: The Path of Water It will hit theaters on December 15.
