Peugeot is already working at full capacity in the development process of a new 48-volt light hybrid technology (MHEV). A system that will be applied, among other models, to the Peugeot 5008. The popular seven-seater SUV will be electrified and, therefore, will finally wear the DGT ECO label.
The peugeot 5008 It is one of the most popular seven-seater SUVs that we can find in the European market. A model that deals in the competitive segment D and that in the Peugeot range plays the role of “big brother” of the Peugeot 3008. Despite the commercial success that it has been reaping, the 5008 has a weak point that prevents it from facing each other on equal terms to its main rivals.
The 5008 engine line-up is made up exclusively of conventional petrol and diesel engines. There are no electrified mechanics. A good part of the rivals with which it must deal on a daily basis do offer engines that bring with them the ECO environmental label and/or 0 Emissions from the DGT (General Directorate of Traffic) with all the mobility advantages that this entails. KIA Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe and SEAT Tarraco are some examples.
The Peugeot 5008 will bet on electrification with MHEV technology
In the convulsive year 2020 marked by the coronavirus pandemic, the 5008 underwent a major overhaul. A mid-cycle update that will allow this generation, the second, to be able to face the rest of the commercial life that lies ahead. Unfortunately, the arrival of this update did not change the mechanical offer.
Peugeot has decided to get to work and solve this problem. All the machinery has been started. Peugeot is already working on the development of a new 48-volt light hybrid technology (MHEV). A technology that will be applied to both the 3008 and the 5008.
At the moment the French brand is in southern Europe carrying out road tests with the first prototypes. Our spy photographers have hunted down the new 3008 lightweight hybrid. A model that was not alone. The future 5008 MHEV is also under developmentand proof of this are these first spy photos.
The new light hybrid technology of the Peugeot 508
The photographed prototype looks, at first glance, like a normal 5008. However, if we pay attention, we will find small clues that show that “something” is hiding under the hood. The warnings of danger due to a lithium ion battery of high voltage is one of the irrefutable proofs that it is not a conventional 5008.
in the bowels of new 5008 mild hybrid a new one is found seven-speed e-DCT dual-clutch automatic gearbox. An electric motor is integrated into the transmission itself and will provide an output of between 17.5 kW (24 hp) and 24 kW (33 hp) respectively. The transmission is combined with a 0.9 kWh lithium-ion battery, which will allow the displacement in 100% electric mode in specific situations. By the way, this new transmission will be connected to a 130 hp 1.2-liter PureTech gasoline engine.
When will it hit the market? Peugeot’s new light hybrid system will be ready in the first quarter of 2023. The truth is that the development process has suffered several delays due to the global shortage of microchips. The new Peugeot 5008 with MHEV technology will go on sale before the end of next year.
