Regarded as one of the best comedy series of all time, The office It reached cult status in just a few years and its legacy is so great that Prime Video Australia has now announced that it will develop a remake, but this time with a female lead.
The Office actually dates from the year 2001 in the UK and is a sitcom that follows the daily lives of employees at a paper office in Slough. The series features the awkward and sometimes cruel humor of regional manager David Brent, played by Ricky Gervais, who seeks to be liked and respected by his employees while struggling to maintain a positive work environment. Through a mockumentary style, the series examines work dynamics, interpersonal relationships, and tensions between characters, creating hilarious yet poignant moments in the mundane office environment.
Despite The Office UK only had two seasons and a total of 14 episodes, the idea was sold to several other countries and it was in the United States where it achieved the success for which it was planned. With Steve Carell in the lead role of Michael Scott, the series became a reference in comedy and came to have nine seasons and 201 chapters.
Now, Deadline reports that Australia will be working on its own version of The Office, now with an actress in the lead role. This is Felicity Ward, who will take the role popularized by Gervais and Carrell. You can read the synopsis below:
“Gervais’ David Brent will become Hannah Howard, with Ward putting her own spin on mismanaging the team at packaging company Flinley Craddick. When she gets word from head office that they’re closing their branch and making everyone work from home, she goes into survival mode and makes promises she can’t keep to keep her ‘work family’ together.”
It is important to mention that The Office Australia will be the thirteenth remake of the series, so there is already a long way to go in terms of recreations; the new version will stand out for having an actress in the starring role of boss, so it will be interesting to see how the plot develops.
Sarah Christie, senior development executive at Prime Video Australia, shared the following statement: “We are thrilled to bring one of the biggest comedy franchises ever created to Prime Video customers in Australia and around the world. It’s an honor to continue The Office’s international comedy legacy locally while introducing new quintessential Aussie characters. We can’t wait for audiences to meet Hannah Howard, the first female boss to have explored The Office format.”
