- According to the National Occupation and Employment Survey (ENOE) 2021, there are 620,000 people dedicated to the provision of paid nursing services in Mexico.
- At present, 79% of this population corresponds to women and the remaining 21% to men.
- Nursing professionals must be prepared in four transversal axes to face the needs and challenges that come.
The nurse of the future must have training in information and communication technologies. The objective is that it allows you to manage and use telemedicine and other digital tools for the monitoring, control and treatment of diseases and pathologies, both in the hospital environment and in the patient’s home.
Values that must prevail within this guild
The foregoing was affirmed by Dr. Virginia Ortiz Arrona, Head of Nursing at the Decentralized Public Organization of Health Services of the Municipality of Zapopan (OPD SSMZ), in her conference “Preparing the nurse of the future”.
This conference was part of the activities of the Third National Congress of Nursing “A boost for Global Health” organized by the OPD of SSMZ and the Autonomous University of Guadalajara (UAG).
In her presentation, she explained that it is essential that the training of the nurse of the future includes an education with values and professional ethics to promote empathy, respect, responsibility and solidarity in patient care.
Pillars that the nurse of the future should have
He also spoke about the four transversal challenges for nursing in 2030which are: practice management, education, nursing research based on practice and evidence, and leadership.
The first aspect, management in practicea, he explained, involves a competent and diversified workforce, prepared to face current challenges and anticipate health priorities.
While, in the aspect of education, he pointed out that it is necessary to have teachers properly trained with the best pedagogical methods and technologies and with proven clinical experience, who strengthen the development of clinical skills and transversal skills in practical, collaborative, interprofessional care , teamwork, use of digital technologies and virtual reality, among others.
And one future research that addresses the challenges of healthcare and contributes to the scientific foundations for innovative clinical practice.
On the other hand, he pointed out that nursing leadership must consolidate professionals in this field, reflecting an improvement in patient, family and community care with great social impact.
“If these axes are followed, the nurses of the future will be trained to face the needs of the present and anticipate the challenges that come.”
Finally, he commented that facing the challenges of the future requires a greater effort from all those involved, such as the health system, the government, employers, educational institutions, international nursing associations, and citizens, among others.
