The new Volkswagen ID.3 is already an official model for China. The German brand’s electric compact was presented this past weekend at the Chengdu Auto Show, announcing the commercial launch for the end of the year. The third electric that the Germans will sell in the Asian country and with which they hope to reach 100,000 units by the end of the year.
Volkswagen’s electric offensive is continuing at a hellish pace. A few weeks ago the German firm confirmed the commercial launch of the new Volkswagen ID.3 in the Asian giant, being available in this market from October. A model of utmost importance for the brand with which it intends to conquer Chinese customers, in addition to surpassing both the zero-emission manufacturers in this country and the European ones that sell on Chinese soil.
And it is that Volkswagen had set the goal of ending the year with 80,000 electric units sold in China and Europe, a figure that has now rounded up to 100,000. A more than ambitious goal that they hope to achieve with the help of this model, despite the microchip crisis, since the German firm will offer only the most equipped versions for an indefinite time.
Volkswagen ID.3 sales in China increase annual targets
For now, Chinese customers only have the two electric SUVs, the ID.4X and the newer ID.6but both are filling the order books in abundance. So much so that the German manufacturer itself has revealed that the sales of the two models have doubled in the last three months, passing from 1,500 units in May to around 3,000 in June and 5,800 in July. Some figures that have allowed Volkswagen to be in the ranking of the top 10 manufacturers in the Chinese electric car market during the past month of July.
Stephan Wöllenstein, Head of Volkswagen China, said in a statement that “With the ID.4 and ID.6 we have successfully launched two strong model series in recent months. The feedback from our customers is promising, the delivery figures meet our expectations. With the ID.3, we are now offering our customers a product in the important compact segment and, in combination with the other ID. Models, we are able to cover a large part of the market.
The Wolfsburg manufacturer is solid in its “ACCELERATE” strategy, which aims to achieve 70% of the share of electricity sales in Europe in the following decade, and somewhat less in the United States and China, 50%. The firm has achieved a new record during the first half of 2021, delivering no less than 160,000 units worldwide, three times more than in 2020 and with the desperate situation of microchips. Specifically, 93,000 electric, compared to 66,000 plug-in hybrids. In the Old Continent, Volkswagen has been the leader in zero-emission sales during the first six months of the year, with no less than 15.4% of the market.
