Mobile phones announced from 2023 could be considerably more resistant thanks to the latest technology announced by Corning, a company specializing in the manufacture of glass and ceramics, among other materials. the american company has announced Gorilla Glass Victus 2a protective glass for technological devices, such as smartphones, that is capable of resisting a drop of up to one meter on concrete surfaces.

While previous versions of Gorilla Glass announced by Corning also withstood drops of up to one meter—and offered scratch resistance—it’s the first time the company’s protective glass has been able to withstand a material as strong as concrete, something that it also guarantees greater resistance on other less hard surfaces. Corning also points out that the glass it should also get away with falls of up to two meters on surfaces such as asphalt; distance in which the mobile is usually found when the user takes a selfie. On the other hand, the company claims that scratch resistance is up to four times greater than competitive aluminosilicate.

The resistance of Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on concrete surfaces also has a reason for being. As Corging has revealed to The Verge, more than 30% of mobile phone falls have occurred on concrete surfaces. This is “more than on any other surface,” says Scott Forester, vice president of Corning’s Gorilla Glass division.

When will we see the first phones with Gorilla Glass Victus 2?

Corning has not revealed which smartphones will come with this new drop-resistant glass. However, it is likely that all those high-end smartphones announced from 2023 will include the one called Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Samsung, for example, usually uses this material on the back and front of its phones, so It would not be strange if this new Gorilla Glass debuted in the Galaxy S23 that the company could announce during the month of February.

We must not forget that Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is not the only resistant glass that we can currently find on the market. Apple also bets on its own technology: Ceramis Shield. This material also protects the front and back against drops and scratches. The Cupertino company, however, does not offer details about durability, only stating that its glass is “more resistant than any smartphone glass.”
