A vast range of colors appropriated the streets, walls and roofs of one of the city halls of the Mexico City. The murals of Iztapalapa became one of the great attractions of this demarcation.
It is “Iztapalapa Mural”, an artistic-social project that emerged in the year 2018. With this initiative, the mayor’s office seeks to dignify and recover public spaces through art.
Iztapalapa is one of the CDMX regions that, for many years, has faced various social troubles ranging from the lack of basic services, such as drinking water, to high levels of violence.
However, with the initiativeIztapalapa Mural” seeks to address the conflict generated from the violence and insecurity of the demarcation.
The mission of the murals of Iztapalapa
The plan established by Mayor Clara Brugada contemplated the installation of streetlights that brought light to the main streets and avenues that were submerged in darkness for a while.
In addition, urban improvement work was carried out to repave the streets, pruning and reforestation of public spaces, installation of security cameras, and creating artistic murals.
The Iztapalapa murals They narrate traditional chronicles of the community that inhabits the demarcation. But you also find in them reminiscences of our prehispanic past and of the social struggles that marked the Mexico history.

It is important to point out that one of the themes that these colorful murals highlight is the rvindication of women in many social spheres: science, art, sport and culture. In addition, they are a means of expression to face the violence against women.
“Iztapalapa Mural is a project designed to claim the right of its inhabitants to have a beautified public space, to recover community life and spaces where abandonment can generate insecurity,” said Brugada Molina, referring to this initiative.
From 2018 to November 2022, a total of 9,191 murals and artistic interventions were made in the streets, public spaces and rooftops of Iztapalapaaccording to the website of this initiative.
Murals and the Cablebus
Iztapalapa also offers the inhabitants and visitors of the demarcation an enviable view of these murals. For also the housetops which are under the Line 2 of the CDMX Cablebus are decorated with these artistic pieces.
This public transport goes from the Constitución de 1917 station to the Santa Marta station, allowing users to appreciate just over 900 murals.
