And it is that once smoking catches you, it will be difficult to escape from its clutches: “70% of smokers want to quit smoking, only 10% succeed and people who start smoking before the age of 21 have more risk of generating a high dependence on nicotine,” the insurer said in a statement on Wednesday.
In Mexico, according to the most recent figures from the National Health and Nutrition Survey (ENSANUT) there are approximately 15 million smokers, of which more than 600,000 are adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17.
On average, a person consumes 7 cigarettes a day, which is equivalent to 2.5 packs a week.
GNP Seguros points out that the main causes of attention for smoking are hypertension, cancer of the trachea, bronchial tubes and lungs; myocardial infarction and cardiovascular diseases.
The 5 states in which the highest number of cases were identified are Nuevo León, Mexico City, Jalisco, Monterrey, the State of Mexico and Baja California.
GNP offers some advice for people who want to stop using tobacco
– Find out about professional support programs that provide support according to your needs.
– Investigate about the health risks to which they are exposed, which can motivate them to abandon this habit.
– Remove cigarettes, ashtrays from the house, as well as wash clothes and clean furniture and everything that smells of smoke.
– Separate the money that was spent on cigarettes and save it or use it for other purposes.
– Find a healthier hobby like exercising, reading, listening to music, etc.
Last year, GNP Seguros served close to 9,400 (almost 4% more than in 2021) cases related with complications of health by smoking, paying an amount of more than 1,522 million pesos. The average cost of care for these diseases last year was 161,000 pesos per event.
