Specifically, the failure affects the function of Alt + Tab of the operating system for those who have installed July 2021 Update in its preview version, and August 2021 Update. The bug was in the July preview version, which was optional, and it was hoped that Microsoft would fix the bug before releasing the final version of the August update. Unfortunately, the company did not fix it with this version.
Alt + Tab does not work well in Windows 10
Thus the patch KB5004296 launched this August, is breaking the Alt + Tab functionality on some computers. This function is basic in the use of the operating system, since it allows you to quickly switch between open windows by holding down Alt and clicking Tab.
However, the bug that has been introduced prevents you from using the function correctly in games. Specifically, if we are playing and we want to switch between the game and another app that we have open, Windows will take us back directly to the desktop and not to the app we have selected. Also, in the event that we want Back to the game, the screen of it will appear black and we will have to close it to reopen it.
Three possible solutions to the failure
The failure occurs if we are running the game in full screen mode, and there are three solutions that can be applied until Microsoft fixes the bug. The first is uninstall updates, which also has the associated danger that we are not protected from the latest patched vulnerabilities. The second is to run the game in mode borderless full screen.
The third solution involves disable function which, in principle, is generating these failures: News and interests. This function has been included in the operating system this year, and apparently it is the culprit that Alt + Tab does not work correctly. To deactivate the function you have to go to the taskbar, right click, and click on News and interests. There appears the option to Disconnect, where, by giving it, it will deactivate the function, and everything will return to normal.
These types of failures keep recurring constantly. Hopefully Microsoft will follow a path of greater reliability with Windows 11 to prevent this type of situation from happening again, especially since they are going to guide Windows even more to games.
