‘Long, Long Time’ is the title of the third chapter of The Last of Usthe series of the moment in the world of streaming. But ‘Long, Long Time’ is also the name of a 70s classic by Linda Ronstadtwhich is causing a sensation on Spotify in the middle of 2023.
According to a report published on the website of Varietythis hit has skyrocketed on the platform’s playlists and, after the episode aired on Sunday, January 29, the song saw streaming numbers increase by 4,900%, according to Spotify.
“Oh, so all of our hearts broke last night…”, wrote the news account on Twitter of the platform.
‘Long, Long Time’ can be heard in scenes with survivors Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett), as well as later in scenes with Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey).
With Bill and Frank, the song is central to their relationship. In the scene, Frank is sitting at the piano and discovers a music book by Linda Ronstadt. He begins to play before Bill walks in to take over and sing the opening lines of the song: “Love will remain, take things easy. Sounds like good advice, but there’s no one by my side”.
How did you choose this song for The Last of Us?
The song choice was made by executive producer and director Craig Mazin, but after his friend Seth Rudetsky suggested it. Mazin was looking for a song for the two characters to connect to.
Talking with VarietyMazin expressed: “I knew the song needed to touch on certain things about longing and pain and infinitely unrequited love.”.
Written by Gary White, the song appears on Ronstadt’s “Silk Purse” album. The single spent 12 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and peaked at number 25.. In 1971, Ronstadt earned a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Female Vocal Performance.
