The Last of Us: Meet the characters of the series, their stories and origins

The Last of Us It is the series that everyone is talking about. The new HBO Max gem, based on the acclaimed Naughty Dog video game, is faithfully adapting the game’s characters to live-action.

Then, we will detail each of the characters that have appeared in the first three episodes of the seriesincluding the protagonist Joel Miller. CNN shared their stories and origins.

joel

Chilean actor Pedro Pascal plays Joel Miller, protagonist of the video game and the series. He is one of the survivors of the main outbreak of infections, which occurred on September 26, 2003, the day the character turned 36 years old.

The character is a native of Texas and had his daughter Sarah at a very young age, but after the death of the little girl, Joel’s life changed. His character is different, he becomes a more bitter man and he seems to have no feelings.

Sarah

Joel’s daughter, a teenager who died at the hands of the army and who marked her father’s life. Played by Nico Parker, the young woman died in the arms of her parent while escaping the outbreak in Austin.

In tribute, Joel wears a watch that his daughter had repaired for her birthday. Two decades after his death, she still wears it.

Tess

Anna Torv plays Tess in the series, appearing in the first two episodes. She is also one of the survivors and Joel’s partner in the quarantine zone in Boston. Both are smugglers of goods and other products.

Tess is the one who leads Joel to Ellie, the teenager who is apparently immune to the infection caused by the Cordyceps fungus.

Ellie

Bella Ramsey plays Ellie Williams, the other protagonist of The Last of Us. She is a teenager who seems to be immune to Cordyceps infection and is one of the few people who resists the disease. She is irreverent and has had to live in the dark and in confinement.

Marlene

Marlene is the leader of the Fireflies, a kind of revolutionary group that fights against the rules of the military that maintain the quarantine zone. She and her group search for a solution to the outbreak that has stopped the world for 20 years. That is why Marlene puts Ellie in the hands of Tess and Joel.

Doctor Ratna

Episode 2 showed Doctor Ranta, in a flashback to Jakarta, days before the outbreak. She is a professor of mycology at the University of Indonesia and is played by Christine Hakim.

In the episode, Ratna examines a woman who is infected with the fungus and tells the authorities that there is no cure for the disease that Cordyceps is causing and says that perhaps the only solution is to wipe out the entire local population with a bomb. It is unknown what happened to her so far.

Bill

Nick Offerman stars as Bill, a survivor who managed to isolate himself from civilization and remain healthy outside of the quarantine zone, thanks to his bunker. He is a lonely man, very reserved and not very social, but his life changes when he meets Frank.

In the bunker he managed to store weapons, utensils for basic needs, among other things. He also built a whole security system with cameras and death traps.

Frank

Frank (Murray Bartlett) is another survivor who, on his way to Boston, falls into one of Bill’s traps. After proving that he was not infected, Frank asks Bill for something to eat because he had not eaten for several days. He feeds her, offers her a bath and clean clothes.

The chemistry between the two awakens after Frank and Bill play the piano. The men begin a relationship that lasted at least a decade. Frank is more friendly and social than Bill and even becomes friends with Tess and Joel. Unfortunately, this character had a sad ending.
