From Counterpoint Research have carried out an intensive analysis on global sales in the high-end smartphone market. The results clearly point to Apple as the leading company in this sector, with a quota greater than 50%.
The global smartphone market has reached a figure of 46% growth compared to the sale of smartphones in 2020. The second quarter of 2021 has proven to be of great benefit to the manufacturers of high-end mobile phones. Companies such as Apple, Samsung or Huawei have acquired a large part of the totality of the sales. Next we will review all the numbers.
IPhone sales in the second quarter of 2021
Sales of the premium segment of smartphones have grown 24% in the second quarter of this year, compared to 21% in the same period in 2020. Apple continues to lead this market sector, with a 57% market share.
It is followed very far by Samsung, with a market share of 17%, behind we have the rest of manufacturers such as Huawei, OPPO or Xiaomi; with 6%, 5% and 6%, respectively.
The growth of the global sale of high-end smartphones
It is worth mentioning that the “high-end smartphones” sector is delimited by those smartphones with a price over $ 400. But among them, we can also divide the sector into three different categories: affordable premium smartphones, premium smartphones and ultra-premium smartphones.
The most affordable high-end smartphones are priced between $ 400 and $ 599. Premium smartphones between $ 600 and $ 799. Lastly, ultra-premium smartphones are priced above $ 800.
According to this graph, the most expensive (ultra-premium) smartphones have had a big sales boom in the second quarter of 2021, compared to the second quarter of last year.
The market for high-end smartphones has seen all the manufacturers’ segments grow without exception. The highest growth (182% compared to the previous year) has been seen in ultra-premium smartphones.
This, according to data from Counterpoint Research, has been mainly due to the high demand for the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max devices. The two models arrived on the market slightly later than the usual September 2020 date, due to delays caused by the health situation, and this caused demand to stretch over the following months.
In fact, Apple has acquired up to 75% of the sales of the ultra-premium smartphone segment, a category that in turn acquired 36% of the sale of premium smartphones in the second quarter of 2021.
“A large part of the premium smartphone market growth in the second quarter of 2021 has been led by Apple, which has reported 74% sales growth over last year in the premium segment.”
What could this change be due to? Perhaps consumers have realized the great importance of high-end smartphones and how profitable it can be to make an investment of this size instead of opting for a more affordable smartphone.
Global smartphone sales in each region
It is more than likely that the impressive growth in sales of high-end smartphones is due to the fact that users have continued to update their terminals to enjoy 5G connectivity technology. The supply chain of Apple and took advantage of the moment of the fall of Huawei in regions such as China or Europe.
Apple has been the manufacturer of smartphones absolutely leader in all regions during the second quarter of 2021. Samsung has ranked second, except in China, where second place is held by Huawei.
The third place is distributed in the different areas by the rest of the companies: OPPO, vivo, Huawei, Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi …
“This change also indicates that more consumers now prefer high-end devices as they realize the importance of smartphones during the 2020 lockdowns.”
While it is true that Samsung has been able to enjoy great growth in the sale of premium smartphones (13% compared to last year), it is also true that the brand has lost a large part of the market share in this sector due to the stoppage of production at its facilities in Vietnam due to the crisis we are going through worldwide.
As for Xiaomi and OPPO, both manufacturers have seen their market share grow considerably thanks to their intelligent expansion in regions such as Europe and China.
Apple still awaits the results of its best quarter
However, despite high sales figures in the second quarter, the good is yet to come for Apple. The Cupertino firm usually achieves its best figures at the end of each year, in the fourth quarter.
This year it will be the new models of iPhone 13 continue to increase sales of Apple smartphones, and according to the high numbers of reservations during the first 24 hours, everything seems to indicate that the fourth quarter will be another great success for Apple.
Recall that only 24 hours after the start of the reservation period, consumers booked more than 5 million iPhone 13 units. A scandalous figure that augurs great benefits for the signature of the apple logo.
