In an interesting report published by the Korean site ETNews, the media tells us that Apple is planning to adopt OLED displays with a touch layer built into the iPhones of 2021. Traditionally, the touch layer is installed separately above the screen. From next year, if the information is confirmed, Apple would change its approach by once again counting on the expertise of Samsung, its main screen supplier.
With the disappearance of the additional layer, the iPhone 13 will be thinner but also lighter if Apple manages to contain the weight of the other components. In addition, the adoption of this technology will reduce the production cost of future iPhones. If they fail to lower their price, this should at least continue to maintain it.
Samsung wants to stay in control
It has been rumored for several months that Apple wants to reduce its dependence on Samsung, which still provides 80% of the OLED screen of the iPhone . The Korean firm would have achieved a big blow by convincing its partner to adopt its screens with integrated touch layer on the iPhone 13, an area in which Samsung maintains a proven technological advance. According to the report from ETnews, the Chinese company BOE, one of Apple’s emerging partners also claims to be able to provide a similar type of OLED display.
In its quest for emancipation from Samsung, Apple is betting big on BOE, the costs of which are much more accessible. The company has also managed to secure a significant market share for the manufacture of the OLED screen for the next iPhone 12. If this massive supply proves to be a success, without quality concerns on the next iPhones, a more extensive partnership could be considered in the years to come.
In the meantime, all eyes are on the iPhone 12 expected in September with OLED screens and full 5G connectivity. Apple will indeed offer both sub-6 GHz bands and powerful mmWave pls, an advantage to which all iPhone 13s of next year would not be entitled.
