If you are going to visit Logroño soon, write down in your address book the Hotel Aurea Palacio de Correos. A 5* boutique hotel belonging to the Eurostars Hotel Company chain and designed by the architecture studio Isern Associates.
The hotel opens its doors in what was the old Post Office building of the capital of La Rioja. Built in 1932, the building has been closed for more than 13 years. And in the adaptation project, the essence of the original building has been preserved with its most symbolic architectural elements, being a referent of the neo-baroque style in the city.
The new establishment now has 41 rooms, in addition to different common areas, such as a restaurant, a spa and a beautiful roof terrace with views of the Riojan capital.
To design it, an attempt has been made to reflect the past use of the building inside, turning the hotel into a tribute to the original activity of the property, with a complete postcards collection with which the postmen used to congratulate the festivities in the past, with pieces from the 18th century.
The rooms are also decorated with colorful compositions created from stamps.
In addition, inside the hotel there are samples of mail art (postal art) and, on the façade, the building’s original mailboxes guard the main entrance. This tribute also extends to his restaurant postmark, another nod to the Correos universe.
The reform has required a complete demolition of the interior
To launch the project, it was necessary to demolish the interior, maintaining the original facades of the building. The structure of the building had been subjected to numerous failed interventions, leaving it in a very precarious state.
From Isern Associats they have explained to us that “An ambitious program on a narrow plot of about 14 meters wide and the pre-existing fit-outs of the structure did not make for an easy start”.
The demolition of the interior made it possible to excavate a new basement, and gain an additional floor to accommodate some rooms, always within the philosophy of generating a dialogue to interact between the original construction of the 20th century and the trends of the 21st century.
“This hotel project had to reflect the origins of the building, respect its past and, therefore, it has required approaching it with a lot of feeling, working on it with a profusion of details, with a very special involvement on our part”, us explains the architect Daniel Isern.
