Well-known faces such as Jaden Smith or Shiloh Jolie-Pitt have helped to give greater visibility and awareness to the LGTBI + community and challenge the gender labels. The world of fashion has taken note and designers/firms bet for neutral collections and designs no matter what genre they are intended for. Defying the labels of “menswear” and “womenswear,” more and more are explore new fields with the intention of opening sights and moving forward.
Fashion knows no gender
It doesn’t matter if you are a man, a woman or a non-binary person, the world of fashion has it clear and presents designs for everyone regardless of the labels that society has imposed over the years. Hence, garments such as dresses adapt to all shapes, that there is no specific style of footwear that decides whether it is for women or men, or even the models that parade on the catwalk are androgynous.
With a mentality deeply rooted in the “boy” and “girl” labels, fashion stylist Miriam Otero knows that although the road is not easy, if we start to put aside those labels, we will achieve a non-binary fashion capable of breaking with everything. “We have to be able to end those stereotypes that we are taught from childhood and that dictate that the color pink, dolls and princesses are only suitable for girls while blue and cars are only for boys.”
The catwalk merges and presents looks without gender labels
As we have already mentioned, if we review the latest catwalks seen at Fashion Weeks, we will realize that the industry is focused on a future without gender constructions.
the spanish designer Palomo Spain advocates this type of fashion and with some statements for Trendencias assures that “although clothes, generally, continue to be formulated with more conventional patterns and silhouettes; where I do believe that we can already see a super important and significant advance is in the comfort of each one of feeling good wearing those pieces that we like -and they fit us, of course- regardless of whether they’re in the boy’s or girl’s section.” In addition, he adds that “those tags, which are terminologies that should disappear or consider other nomenclatures, we are beginning to see them overcome”.
Opting for totally gender-irrelevant design codes, firms such as Gucci, Thom Browne, Raf Simons, Balenciaga or Palomo Spain have been advocating collections “for everyone” for years.
The Spanish designer knows that one has to wear what he likes regardless of his gender identity. “If you like a Dior Gaucho or a gorgeous Loewe bag, what difference does it make which shelf it’s on? The same goes for colours, silhouettes and garments. Little by little! There’s a lot to learn and still to soak in, but I think there has been an interesting advance in that sense”.
People who help make this “trend” visible
We do not like to label this new movement as a trend, as we believe that these are temporary and that genderless fashion arrives with the intention of establishing itself and not disappearing. celebrities the likes of Billy Porter, Harry Styles, Lil Nas X or Jared Leto do not hesitate to take advantage of red carpet events to remember that fashion is for having fun and expressing yourself however you want.
Just a few weeks ago, the British Harry Styles premiered his new video clip, as it wasand there we see it with the same outfits than the model that appears in it.
But far from staying at red carpet events, Jacquemus wanted to go further and presented a campaign for this Spring-Summer 2022 where Bad Bunny was the protagonist and dressed in minidresses, heels and even a vest (and nothing else… literal).
It didn’t take long for people to compare this image to the one of Brad Pitt on the cover of Rolling Stones magazine in 1999.
The unisex trend is becoming more and more present in stores low cost
This trend -so to speak- we not only see it on the catwalks. fashion firms low cost They apply it in their day to day with collections for all tastes. Brands like Zara, Weekday or H&M have been presenting unisex collections for seasons, and even the C. Tangana x Bershka capsule collection was accompanied by designs that were far from the classic tracksuit or sportswear.
Little by little the world of fashion leaves behind the stereotypes of the past and focuses on creating designs for everyone.
