Alex proyas has taken advantage of the promotional campaign for ‘Mask of the Evil Apparition’, a short film set in the universe of ‘Dark City’, to announce that it has a TV series based on this great science fiction film released in 1998. Let us remember that Proyas himself created the story, co-wrote the script and took care of the staging of the original film.
The status of the project
Of course, the television series of ‘Dark City’ is in an early stage of development, so the project could well end up being nothing. In fact, she doesn’t even have a home for her yet, but Proyas has commented on the following:
I have to re-analyze the order to build a new story. I have to go back and refresh my memory on what we did, what I think worked, what didn’t, and reevaluate my own movie. It has been an interesting experience and one that I had not done before.
Curious that he comments on that when in 2008 he had the opportunity to launch a director’s cut from ‘Dark City’ to offer a vision of the story much closer to what he originally had in mind, although he himself emphasizes that it was simply impossible “rescue her completely“for a technical question and to achieve it”you would have to go straight back to the dailies to do something like that“.
The truth is that ‘Dark City’ clicked at the box office when it hit theaters in 1998, but it quickly became a cult film, also being a direct precedent to ‘The Matrix’, with which it has several points in common. I wouldn’t dare say that Proyas’s tape is better than the Wachowskis -They are both very successful tapes-, but it is quite unfair that the latter swept the box office when the first one went unnoticed …
