Today, March 29, the birth of my mother, Gloria Susana, is celebrated, who has given me everything and for whom I am where I am. So first of all, a greeting and recognition to her and all her mothers. On the other hand, it is important to consider that the first quarter of the year is over, how are you doing in terms of budget? How are the projects and goals going?
Today I come to talk to you about the role that I have to fulfill every day, from which I continue to learn and try to improve in my day to day: the role of director. The last book I read about it is The manager’s job by Carlos Ruiz González: I want to talk about this book and its teachings today.
In the title of the column is precisely the key to the book, that is to say, that the function of a director is to make ECHO:
– ANDstrategist: creating a vision of what it will be and how it will achieve it
– C.Organization Builder: Building Organizational Capabilities
– EITHERperador (or hurt): ensuring things happen to achieve results
To achieve this, the director has to be constantly active regarding prudential knowledge, which is based on the principle of DDM:
– D.Diagnose: where we are, to recognize and determine the SWOT
– D.decide: determine where we want to go and how we plan to get there
– mwalking and execution: driving one and all towards the goal that was stipulated
It is important to generate the activities based on the DDM to achieve the roles of the ECO. For this you need:
1. Constantly diagnosing to validate or recalculate the strategy
- Being agile in decisions, but at the same time respecting budgets to continue building the organization always in the best way and advancing at the best pace
- Have command ability and resources to execute and make things happen, that the operation goes from strength to strength, and always has customer satisfaction
Lastly, I really like how managerial work is described: “it is a creative, service task that combines various abilities, vocations and avenues of human knowledge”.
In short, this is a very brief summary of a great book, highly recommended, with great phrases and life examples of successful directors, as well as a good cadence that encourages good reading as well as easy and constant learning.
