The Digital Cluster of Catalonia in joint coordination with Navozyme, Blue Room Innovation, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, and the Innovative Business Groups have completed the first phase of the Portwaste projectan algorithm that verifies the traceability of the waste route from its arrival at the port treatment plant, its subsequent treatment and reinsertion into the market through recycling.
According to a statement from the Cluster Digital Cataluña, in this initial phase and through a previous study, It has been concluded that the most appropriate blockchain network to implement the waste traceability system is CircularTrust. In this way, data from private groups can be included using Hyperledger Fabric technology, keeping sensitive data from companies that do not want to share it, but at the same time allowing the addition of data that allows waste traceability.
In this sense, they explained that One of the purposes of the project is also to reduce transaction costs between recyclers and the manufacturing industry to increase the profitability of raw material operations that come from circular environments to promote their expansion.
Finally, they pointed out that in the next phases of the project, they intend to be able to validate the technology in real environments and introduce Portwaste to the market through different Spanish ports by this year 2024 through verified waste passports, as well as the expansion on a European scale to 2025.
“In the second phase of the project, research and development of a secondary market will be sought using the data obtained in the first phase and Portwaste’s benefits will be improved by adding a layer of digital identity and another of Business Intelligence that processes all the information stored in the blockchain. to achieve key indicators and add value to the environment”they expressed.
