The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), will make a change in the combination of the license plates of Spanish vehicles starting this fall of 2022, after last September 1 will be assigned the last applicable combination with the letter L (LZZ) to an Audi Q3 Sportback. The new cars that are sold from this month will have the letter M on their license plate and, specifically, the combination ‘MBB’.
In Spain, let us remember, the DGT registration system consists of four numbers that start from 0000 to 9999. Also a combination of three letters that starts with the order of the alphabet. That is, from ‘BBB’ to ‘ZZZ’. This, specifically, allows the registration of more than 80 million vehicles until all the combinations are completed, as they change successively (BBB 0000, BBB 0001, etc.). It is expected, therefore, that during the next few weeks the license plate will be installed ‘MBB 0000’.
Although the correct thing would be to start with the ‘MAA’ combination, the DGT excludes some letters in its registration system. Among them, the vowels (A, E, i, O, U), to avoid bad words, or those that have special characters (such as Ñ, Q, CH, LL), since they could cause legibility problems.
The DGT has been registering vehicles with the letter ‘L’ for three years
Until now, and for three years, the DGT has been registering vehicles with the L, this being the second longest combination since the aforementioned body modified the registration system in 2000. This, apparently, is due to low sales of new cars, caused, in turn, by the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. . Also due to problems in supply chains and the shortage of semiconductors. The longest combination is the one with the letter H (from HBB to HZZ), which began in December 2010 and ended in November 2014.
The new combination of DGT license plates, on the other hand, can be useful to know the age of a vehicle. Specifically, those registered with the letter ‘M’ are cars that have come out from September 2022.
The combination of DGT license plates, which began in 2000, after this body registered the vehicles with the initials of each province, is expected to last at least 40 years. That is, until 2040.
