“They’re still a mysterious race,” says Toriyama.
During many Dragon Ball story arcs we saw all kinds of unexpected turns, between the most risky adventures or the most emotional moments for fans, such as Bardock’s discoveries and the indirect relationship he had with his son, Goku. Making him a character quite different from how he had been considered so far. But thanks to the fact that we now know that perhaps Bardock was a much more complex character than expected and the impact that this had on the fate of the Saiyan on earth, it could be said that Toriyama was preparing us for a different scenario.
Once this chapter in the life of the main hero was closed, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero arrived to change the course of the history of the main series. Thus, the sequel to Dragon Ball Super: Broly redoubled efforts to focus on Piccolo and Gohan during an epic showdown with the Red Ribbon Army. While the new androids Gamma Number 1 and Gamma Number 2, created by the Army, plan their revenge, Pan is the link that will bring Gohan to play, in a super battle.
What Akira Toriyama revealed about Piccolo
On the other hand, it is no surprise that the film focused on Piccolo, since Toriyama has stated in the past that the Namekian is his favorite character.. However, things seem to have changed slightly in the history of the Namekians after Toriyama’s statements in a recent interview. The mangaka explained that the Namekian race has a peculiarity in its anatomy that had not been revealed until now. And, to be precise, it’s a pretty important detail that fans hadn’t noticed before.
This revelation is very pertinent at this time considering that Piccolo will receive a new transformation in the next film of the franchise. Although Dragon Ball has not given much information about the Z fighter, given the mangaka’s preference for the character, surely a great mission awaits him.
But, returning to the subject that interests us, in this revealing interview Dragon Ball creator was asked about the mystery of Piccolo’s feet, alluding to the fact that the Namekian (also known as Piccolo the Demon King for his great deeds and his initial path to evil), has never taken off his shoes. For this reason, the mangaka gave some somewhat surprising explanations:
“Eh? Has he never taken off his shoes? That also surprises me. I think they are more or less like Earthlings’ feet, but his toenails are black, like his fingernails. *Note 1: In this movie, Piccolo’s nails are black, line in the original manga.”
In fact, it was not the only thing that Toriyama explained about the intense history of the Z fighter and his respective differences with the rest of the namekians, but he added the following:
“Piccolo is quite a complex character. He was originally the demon king Piccolo who split from the god who created the Earth’s dragon balls. But then he was defeated by Goku, and the boy (or rather double of himself) he left behind He entered the Tenkaichi Budokai under the name “Ma Junior” to hide his true identity. Later, during the battle against Frieza, he was empowered by merging with a Namekian named Nail, and even later, he recombined with God, which brings us to the present. It’s a past so complicated that even I have a hard time remembering it (laughs).
Most Namekians are Sage-types, and Fighting-types like Piccolo are rare. They’re still a mysterious race, so they can be a bit of a headache even for me, the original creator.”
It seems a minor detail that these anatomical differences, in contrast to what was expected almost by inertia of the Namekian race, continue to come up at this point. And, despite the fact that it seems that for the mangaka it is an insignificant fact, he does not cease to surprise his fans when they think they know everything about his favorite series and characters. However, the most fascinating thing about Piccolo is still a conversion to goodness that distinguished him from other villains in Dragon Ball. For this reason, there is no doubt that in the future we will continue to discover other curiosities about the Namekian or even about other characters.
