Mutants are approaching the horizon of Marvel Studios, but in the face of new times that demand more space for diversity and equity, the name of X-Men could remain in the past
The arrival of mutants to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is inevitable, and although X-Men is one of the franchises whose return is one of the most anticipated, Marvel Studios is working to make some adjustments to the most important title in mutant mythology.
Don’t Miss: Should Marvel Studios Rename The X-Men To Make It More Inclusive?
Recall that in 1963, amid generational friction and an obvious racial gap, Marvel Comics presented The X-Men # 1, in a metaphor that intended to make a complaint against racism and discrimination.
From the first issue of X-Men, the team has embraced Jean Gray, formerly known as Marvel Girl, into their ranks, and throughout nearly six decades of existence, the iconic Marvel title has brought heroines and villains to the fore.
Storm, Jubilee, Rogue, Jean Gray / Phoenix, Mystique, Emma Frost, Psylocke, and more women have shown their power to be similar to, and even superior to, male mutants.
Even in one of the scenes in X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Raven tells Charles Xavier that women have saved men several times, so the group should be called X-Women.
Rename X-Men?
As SMASH reported to you in a timely manner, Marvel Studios plans that the title of the first installment of X-Men under its seal is not exclusive to any gender, ethnicity or nationality, taking into account activist movements in favor of equality.
Even recently, characters belonging to the LGTB category, such as Negasonic Teenage Warhead or Bobby Drake / Iceman, have been integrated into the ranks of the X-Men in comics, reinforcing the premise of the Marvel title against discrimination.
One possibility that Marvel Studios analyzes is to name the X-Force team, a team that debuted in the comics in 1991, and was the conversion of The New Mutants, under the leadership of Cable and in a second stage by Wolverine.
However, around the world the mutant mythology of Marvel is recognized with the title of X-Men, a franchise that both in the comics and throughout 12 films produced between the years 2000 and 2019.
One latent possibility is to name the movie The Mutants, the first name Stan Lee came up with for this title, but after a debate with former Marvel editor Martin Goodman, The man named this team the X-Men.
