We Spaniards can sleep peacefully, at least when it comes to canned tuna. Or so the OCU accredits itwhich in its latest comparator has provided revealing data on the type of canned tuna that we Spaniards buy.
After analyze 32 different products, all advertised as canned tuna —some in sunflower oil and others in olive oil—, none fail. Also, generally speaking, the grades are pretty good except for one factor: excess salt.
As usual in these comparisons, the OCU also focuses on the quality-price as a certain guaranteeat the same time comparing private labels with leading brands and, to no one’s surprise, private labels have been the ones that have received the best marks.
The truth is that the analysis indicates that the quality in general is very good, showing that the tuna was packed fresh, that there are no remains of skin and that there are no strange colors or flavors. They do warn that there is an excess of salt in general, but after analyzing all the samples, they verified that all the packaged fish was tuna and that the amount of crumb – shredded tuna – is below the allowed limits.
Even so, the OCU warns of a little trick between the different producers: the size of the can. The reason is that the containers are very different, which is why there may be a pack of three cans that do not have the same format, which is why its price is not easy to compare with the naked eye and we must look at the weight per kilo , not in the unit price of the product.
In a similar sense, the OCU misses labeling improvements that explain the fishing area or the way to contact the manufacturerespecially in the private label, where it is almost impossible to know who packs the preserves unless we use the Internet.
The good news is that the level of the Spanish private label is very good and where the OCU highlights two products. The best of the comparison is the canned tuna Sal de Plata, from Aldi, which has 86 points and of which the good flavor, the smooth texture and the correct salt point for its pack of 2.69 euros for the three cans stood out.
El Velero – Bonito del Norte in Olive Oil – White Tuna – 112 g – [pack de 5]
For his part, the silver in the ranking goes to him. canned tuna from Hacendadoin its format of six 60-gram cans (5.02 euros) and where they praise the aroma and intense flavor of tuna and the pleasant texture.
