Origin of the Amealco Doll
It is easy to find them in craft stalls, street markets, shops and many other places. They stand out for their cute little face and their colorful trousseau. These characteristic dolls are also known as Marias either otomi dolls.
Its origin dates back to colonial times. It is a consequence of the syncretism of the Spanish culture and of the original peoples –mainly between the Otomi and Mazahuas– of Michoacanof Mexico state and, above all, of Amealco, Queretarowhere they became more relevant.
In addition, it is believed that the first dolls were made of clay, palm and corn hair. Though its purpose was not to be a toy but to protect children from evil spirits.
Later, those materials were replaced with rags (currently poplin) and colored ribbons. In this way, the dolls represented the way of dressing indigenous womenthus becoming a figure of regional identity and later of the entire country.
It should be noted that due to their cheerful character, Amealco dolls became very popular among girls, boys and even adults.
