We got on board Ford’s most powerful electric pony today. The Mustang Mach-e GT must live up to a legendary name and surname. Will it succeed? 487 horsepower and more torque than the Ford GT.
When we talk about electric cars we usually think of them in terms of efficiency and savings. A technology designed to save the world, not to run away from it. The Ford Mustang Mach-e GT it has several little secrets that make it one of the fastest cars to ever come out of the ovens of the oval brand. An electric like few others on the market.
I must admit that from the first moment I got into the new Ford Mustang Mach-e, aka the Maqui, I seemed one of the most logical and recommended electric vehicles on the market. That feeling grew when I got into the driver’s side. With these premises, it was to be expected that the GT version had to like me, and it has been.
The idea of taking advantage of the Mustang legacy for an electric vehicle still does not seem good to me, but Ford was already thinking about this GT before naming that pony that all four-wheel lovers have in such high esteem. The GT is a full-fledged MUSTANG, faster and more powerful than it. That’s how good this first mass electric from Ford turns out to be.
We could also say that it is even attractive to the eye. The normal Mach-e is already a striking car in itself, but the GT manages to attract a public looking for something more than an electric. Aesthetically there are differences with respect to conventional models. Especially at the front where a different grille and lower part of the bumper are hinted at.
But it is in the side view where we can best determine that this Maqui it is not normal. 20-inch specific wheels, body-colored wheel arches and red-painted brake calipers with the Brembo emblem very clear. It is curious that the rear part hardly changes. He can also be recognized for his war paints, as the specific colors CyberOrange and Grabber Blue are added to the standard palette. Get used to seeing them in that color because it is the positioning color.
Moving inside presents fewer tinkering. The front seats draw almost all the attention for their sporty shapes. They are comfortable for long trips and at the same time compress the meats very well when the right foot is encouraged. Except for that, and small logos scattered around the interior, you can’t talk about big changes. It was already good what there was, so it was better not to play a lot something that you already know works.
Technologically speaking I cannot mention differences either. Once again, the tech payload of a Mustang Mach-e is good enough. The known structure is maintained. A small display in front of the driver to show the most basic information, and a large central screen with 15.5 inches to collect each and every one of the functionalities of the multimedia system. Well presented and done.
It is usually a common criticism to complain, complain, that a single screen receives so much prominence, but it must be recognized that Ford has done a sensational job with the software. The handling is very simple and intuitive. The necessary information is quickly found. Reading is clear and, thanks to large buttons, clicking on the panel is hardly a problem. Even the fact of having the air conditioning included is not annoying. So yes.
But the technology present in the Mustang Mach-e GT does not stop there, there is more, much more. Full LED headlights, access by code, Bang & Olufsen sound system with 10 speakers, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, panoramic roof, wireless charger, dual zone climate control (without heat pump), heated seats and steering wheel and the widest catalog of assistance and safety systems.
After all, there is a lot of bodywork on the Mustang Mach-e to gossip. We are not looking at a small car. Its 4.71 meters long take us into the D-SUV segment. 2.98 of those meters are used for the wheelbase. A very generous wheelbase that allows up to five passengers to be accommodated inside. The rear bench offers plenty of legroom, although somewhat less for the head. There is no shortage of trunk either, 402 liters of total capacity from a large rear trunk and an additional 100 from a very practical front drawer to leave the charging cables.
The GT surname at Ford must be earned, as it is only reserved for models that really awaken an extra emotional factor. For this, the Mustang Mach-e has added a second electric motor. The largest battery in the family is also added with 88 kWh of net capacity. All this translates into 487 horsepower and 860 Nm of torque.. The Ford with more torque in Europe, even above the supercar Ford GT, 15% more.
Being an electrician, you also have to take into account other considerations such as the autonomy: up to 500 kilometers in WLTP cycle. Acceleration: from 0 to 100 in 3.7 seconds, and recharging power: up to 150 kW, allowing you to recover at a cheerful rate of 99 kilometers of autonomy every 10 minutes, or to go from 10 to 80% of the battery in about 45 minutes. As long as the connection is made to a 150 kW outlet. Except that it does not have a heat pump, as an electric one it presents exceptional data.
Test Ford Mustang Mach-e GT
That last name weighs heavily and cannot be taken lightly, not if Ford wants us to continue to hold the acronym in high regard. Having made it clear that the Mustang Mach-e is good electric, what does it have to be considered a good sports car? Let’s see. At the structural level there are no major changes. The base deck is stiff enough to handle the increased power, but that doesn’t mean there are no changes.
Do not miss the in-depth test of our colleague Oscar Magro.
The suspension has received almost all the attention. A car that is capable of reaching its maximum torque in just 0.5 seconds has to be able to handle everything that is presented to it well, and the MagnaRide2 adaptive suspension set ensures excellent control. Charged with a magnetic fluid, electronic dampers are able to respond almost instantly to the demands of the driver.
The steering has also been fine-tuned, more precise and faster. Pirelli has created specific tread and characteristics tires in a size 245/45 R20 with a width of 8 inches, one more than those of the normal versions. And finally the brakes. Ventilated discs and 385-millimeter Brembo pads on the front axle to stop so much speed and such uncontrolled weight.
With a weight of 2,348 kilograms, the Mustang Mach-e GT announces an approved consumption in average cycle of 20.6 kWh per 100 kilometers
And, of course, electronics could not miss the party. It’s the good thing about electric cars, that as soon as you touch a couple of cables you get a different car. Electronic calibration of components such as the throttle has allowed engineers to achieve a sportier and more aggressive feel. The system is configured to progressively increase its presence on the rear axle thanks to the various driving programs.
Do not forget that the Mach-e GT offers all-wheel drive, although depending on the driving mode we can transform it from a pleasant SUV to an aggressive racing car. The driving modes are: Whisper, Active, Untamed and Untamed Plus. As we climb that sport ladder, the rear axle receives more and more control until we have everything. In its most aggressive format the Maqui GT it’s a all behind with 487 horsepower and 860 Nm of torque. Almost nothing.
Let’s face it, electrics aren’t particularly fun. They are fast, yes, they have a lot of acceleration, too, but what is said fun, fun, they are not. Rare are the exceptions. You could say that the Mustang Mach-e GT is one of them. A good electric and a car that you can have a great time with when the road twists. It has strength for what you want and a little more. Overtaking is child’s play, just touch the right pedal and go off the rails.
Such is the transfer of weights to the rear axle that for a moment the nose appears to float. The back is glued to the seat, and it does not matter in which way you go. In fact, the differences between them are almost minimal. The most noticeable is the retention in sport mode, since the L position of the gearbox is immediately activated, and a very slight stiffening of the suspension. A suspension that, by the way, holds the car at all times and in all circumstances. The turn is almost flat, something that is penalized in terms of comfort.
The rear axle’s response is dry, but it’s not uncomfortable either. The insulation from the outside is good. Little or nothing is transmitted to a cabin completely independent from the outside. Double glassware and insulation panels repel any discomfort. The only thing that will be noticeable is the air when traveling at high speed, and the false noise to V8 of the Untamed mode (deactivatable).
The top sports mode, the aforementioned Untamed Plus, can only be activated within the limits of a circuit and therefore in a normal and real world it does not make any sense. In any case, you don’t have to go to that extreme to see how good the Mustang Mach-e GT is. Its excellent chassis, its dynamic configuration and the strength of its engines make you lose your mind in any acceleration. The curves link them quite naturally, and in that, I think, it is better than a Mustang of a lifetime.
Now, the biggest drawback of this round product is the price. What an electrician gives you on one side he takes away from you on the other. Nowadays, having a high-performance electric means making a good outlay for it. For the specific case at hand, Ford asks us no less than 72,754 euros for the Mustang Mach-e GT. If we look around we will see similar cars for a higher price, so looking at it in perspective it is not that expensive, although it is. We will have to wait and see if these battery-powered sports cars lower the price.
Conclusions
I’m not saying anything new when I say that Ford has done an excellent job with the Mustang Mach-e. From the beginning I have taken it as one of the best electrics on the market, and its GT format does not disappoint. It is very difficult to awaken passion with an electric, but where many shipwrecks Ford has sighted land. The Mustang Mach-e GT earns the last name, and even the name sticks to it, although I still think that another denomination would have been better. It is an expensive product, exclusive and even, if you think about it carefully, unnecessary.
The electric ones were born to respond to a problem of waste and waste. An electric should always be effective and efficient, words synonymous with boring. Ford knows that it is not going to sell many GTs, possibly there are more gasoline Mustang GTs than this one because after all they come out cheaper, but the Americans have wanted to bring that touch more passionate, less cerebral, and it is appreciated.
