Mexican authorities said on the eve that Tesla would invest more than 5,000 million dollars for the new plant, in the state of Nuevo León, where it would produce around a million vehicles a year.
“It will be the largest Tesla electric vehicle plant in the world,” Delgado said. “It is not the only investment that we are working on with Tesla,” added Martha Delgado, Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs.
Tesla’s recently announced Nuevo León plant will employ between 5,000 and 6,000 people.
López Obrador said he discussed the possibility of installing a battery plant during a conference call with Musk last Monday.
“I clarified that lithium has already been nationalized, but that does not mean that we can agree. Lithium belongs to the Mexicans, but if the raw material is purchased, if the battery plants are set up here, if the workers are given work Mexicans, we would agree,” added the president.
