For years, the 2K Sports brand of Take-Two Interactive has published video games of the WWE and, for the most part, the companies have maintained a positive relationship. That changed with the release of WWE 2K20, a game that was criticized by critics and rejected by fans for its lack of content and flaws.
Following the disastrous launch of WWE 2K20, it is said that the WWE held talks with EA to make future WWE games instead, and that 2K Sports had one last chance to bring the series back.
2K Sports canceled WWE 2K21 and gave developer Visual Concepts more time to work on WWE 2K22. As a result, WWE 2K22 far surpassed WWE 2K20, earning much more positive reviews and being hailed by the community as one of the best wrestling video games in years.
WWE 2K20 brought back many fan-favorite features and introduced major improvements to core gameplay, with many hailing it as a major step forward for the franchise.
Shortly after the critical and commercial success of WWE 2K22, WWE and 2K Sports announced that their collaboration would continue for the foreseeable future. And now we know when we can expect the next game in the WWE 2K series.
The latest financial report take-two has officially announced WWE 2K23confirming that the game is expected to launch sometime in fiscal year 2023.
Interestingly, Take-Two’s financial report does not mention any platform for WWE 2K23. This could be a sign that the publisher is still deciding the exact direction the game will take. Although PS4 and Xbox One have large player bases, making WWE 2K23 only for PS5 and Xbox Series X could result in a more impressive product.
Unfortunately, console supply issues continue to plague the industry, so WWE 2K23 may benefit from being a cross-gen game, even if doing so affects it in some ways.
