Charm is the Disney movie that is conquering the hearts of thousands of viewers around the world. The film is inspired by the people, customs and landscapes of Colombia, allowing dark-skinned boys and girls to be reflected and identified on the big screen.
Such is the case of a little boy, who has been moved to meet Antonio, one of the characters in the film, with whom curiously shares physical similarities.
One mom shared her experience of inclusion by watching the animated film, in which her two-year-old son, Kenzo, noticed that a character named Antonio was identical to him.
According to the story, Kenzo was amazed and identified with seeing someone like him on screen. The little boy’s reaction was so emotional that he did not hesitate to pose next to his new favorite character.
He seemed to be in awe, he just smiled and looked at the screen. Then he stood up and looked at his dad and me, still smiling. To him, I really think he thought he was seeing himself because of the resemblance between him and Antonio.
Kenzo spent hours in front of the monitor and watched the movie over and over until he fell asleep. The woman thanked the creators of this film and each of the characters, because during her childhood there were never characters that made her feel identified, but fortunately her son can.
I am very grateful for moments like this because I am aware of its impact, especially for brown children. Bring joy to our family. There is power in representation and magic in creativity. This generation and future generations will experience inclusion because the film industry is moving in a direction that reflects the true diversity of our world.
Stories like these prove the importance of inclusion and diversity on screen, as we all deserve to feel represented and get excited about it.
