There are fewer days left for the theatrical release of Super Mario Bros. The Movie, one of the productions that has generated the most interest in 2023. Starring Chris Pratt in the role of Mario and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Seth Rogen will play the hugely popular Donkey Kong.
One of the concerns of the fans is regarding the voices. Pratt received all kinds of pressure and criticism in networks for this situation, and in front of this Rogen draws a limit.
Rogen chatted with comic book about.
“I was very clear, I don’t do voices,” the comedian said of his talk with the producers when they sought him out to play the gorilla. “And if you want him to be in this movie, he’ll sound like me and that’s it.”
“And that was the beginning and the end of that conversation. I was like, ‘If you want Donkey Kong to be a lot like me, I’m your guy.’ It seemed to work, you know. I think in the movie and in the game all you really know about Donkey Kong is that he throws barrels and he doesn’t like Mario very much.”
The development of Donkey Kong in the Mario universe
Donkey Kong was created by Shigeru Miyamoto, establishing himself as Mario’s first opponent in the gorilla arcade video game, released in 1981.
He is one of Nintendo’s most iconic mascots, appearing not only in more of its own video games, but also in Mario series such as Mario Kart 64, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, Mario Baseball and Mario Party, among other titles.
His voice for the video games was done by Grant Kirkhope and Takashi Nagasako. On TV, it was done by Richard Yearwood, Sterling Jarvis and Franck Capillery, until Seth Rogen’s appearance in Super Mario Bros. The Movie.
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, and produced by Shigeru Miyamoto (Nintendo) and Chris Meledandri (Illumination), Super Mario Bros. The Movie will be in theaters from April 5.
