The age of Ultron is here. And this time the animated version is devastating with an episode that connects directly with the final twist / cliffhanger of the hilarious seventh episode. On this occasion, ‘What if …?’, The Marvel series for Disney + asks the alternative to the second film of ‘The Avengers’: what would happen if Ultron won?
Of course, from here on, we will have spoilers for the eighth episode of the series.
The farewell to the great Asgardian party organized by Thor brought us an unexpected end: the appearance of Vision embedded in the exoskeleton of Ultron full of the gems of infinity. Everything pointed out that it was not “countryman“, so to speak. And this episode confirms it.
On this occasion, Uatu takes us through a world in which VisionTrón He achieved his goal of taking control of everyone’s favorite synth. The only resistance left are Clint and Natasha, a surrendered Hawkeye and a feisty Black Widow who will try her best to disconnect the hive mind from the robotic villain.
After seeing how events unfolded with Ultron having taken control of the entire universe (including a victory against Thanos that has not convinced me), we will see the superhero couple with their last spring: locate the only one who could “hack” this, none other than the great Arnim Zola. All this as we watch the greatest crisis of the Watcher, who is more than tempted to break his oath.
Breaking down the barriers of the multiverse
You will hardly have to think about it too much when we see VisionTrón being aware of the space between realities from which The Watcher tells us things. Bored with his control over the Universe, his thirst for conquest has a new destination: the Multiverse.
Thus, we find a epic fight between Vigilante and villain that will occupy part of the episode. A conflict that, from the beginning, warns us that this will be what takes us to the end of the series. The risk is too high and transcendent and this, more than likely, will cause the reunion of the greatest heroes of the multiverse that the mid-season trailer hinted at.
Broadly speaking, ‘What if … Ultron wins?’ is an action packed episode that breaks the schemes of the series. We are no longer facing a lonely episode in an anthology. This episode and the next make up an ending that points to everything we’ve seen so far (and there we have Doctor Strange from episode 4).
Let’s not advance, yes, events. But everything points to that. However, we are here to rate the episode itself. And this penultimate installment has given us great doses of epic and a bleak vision of what is to come. Hopefully it’s worth it.
