One of the most important aspects of RPGs It lies in the wide options that they offer us in terms of character editing, after all, we are facing a “role-playing game”. This gives us the possibility of adopting a totally different person from the real world, although of course, it is also valid to want to transport your physical characteristics and your personality to this virtual world.
Recently, Quantic Foundry carried out a study in which they investigated 500 thousand players to find out their preferences when editing their character in an RPG. This study was focused on both men and women, and it was revealed that the vast majority of users prefer to play with a character of the same gender. Specifically, the percentages were as follows:
– Female audience – 76%
– Male audience – 48%.
Similarly, it was revealed that men do not have as much problem in playing with a female character, since 29% of them said they were satisfied with having to choose a female character, while 9% of women would prefer to have a character male within videogames.
The research also addressed the issue of non-binary characters, and the results were like this:
– Non-binary – 38%
– Women – 33%
– Men – 10%
At the end of the investigation, Quantic Foundry could not determine an exact reason why these conclusions were reached, but they do have a few theories. To begin with, they consider that having female characters gives a certain tactical advantage since the character is expected to be weaker or less skilled. On the other hand, it is believed that having a female character grants certain social advantages, such as invitations or greater interactions with other members of the community. This talking about multiplayer experiences, and specifically, about MMORPGs What Final Fantasy XIV or World of Warcraft.
