Netflix premieres the first seven chapters of Stranger Things 4 and in Geek Culture we already saw it to be able to tell you, without going into spoilers, what you are going to find and what expectations to have.
If you are a fan of stranger things and you follow the group of Hawkins since the first season (released six years ago) surely you are crossing off the days so that Friday the 27th arrives as soon as possible and you can see the new batch of episodes. In geeky culture We could already see the first six chapters and, without spoiling anything, we tell you what you can expect.
First of all let’s start with the obvious, after four seasons we can say that there are many words to describe the town of Hawkins, but “quiet” is definitely not one of them anymore. This little town in Indiana has a lot of bad luck, too much. Of the demogorgon to the Mind Flayer and of Mind Flayer a neighbor (among other things). Give the people who live there a break.
In case you don’t remember, the previous season had ended with two deaths: that of Billysacrificing himself to save his sister Max and the rest of the protagonists, and that of hopper that, thanks to trailers, we know that he is actually alive and is a prisoner in Russia. We also saw how the main group separated: Joyce, Will, Jonathan Y raise moved to California, while Dustin, Mike, Lucas, Max, Nancy, Steven Y Robin they stayed in Hawkins.
Stranger Things 4 It shows us that not much time has passed since those events (approximately six months), which is not very believable because our protagonists have grown (and a lot). The first chapters show us how the characters deal with what happened and if they are adjusting (or not) to high school and their “new lives”. Yes, they behave in a more adult and mature way, but this is also thanks to the topics that are covered: mourning, physical and emotional distancing, isolation, the problem of wanting to belong at school, bullying and more.
All of this is going to have a key role when it comes to facing the new monster that comes to break with the “normality” of Hawkins: neighbor. already characteristic of stranger thingsthe game of Dungeons & Dragons it is transported, in some way, to the world of the series and we see how our protagonists handle certain situations as if it were a game. In this season specifically it takes on even more importance, since we will meet the Hellfire role-playing club, led by one of the new characters. Eddie MunsonJoseph Quinnand we will see the bad press that the table role had in the 80s.
During the last days there were two topics that were talked a lot about Stranger Things 4: which is the most terrifying season and its long duration. As for the first, yes. Compared to the previous ones, there is no doubt that they went that way and it shows in the amount of blood, violence and the good sense of terror that you will find. Now, this doesn’t mean you’re going to have to watch her with all the lights on…or do you? It depends how much this type of series affects you.
Recall that the fourth season of stranger things is inspired by Nightmare on Elm Streeta film that left us thinking about how we never want to come across Freddy Krueger. The tribute is so big and notorious that they not only included Robert Englund in an important role as Victor Creelbut the terror of nightmares or the dangers that can come from our subconscious is also very present.
Now, as for the duration of this season, stranger things (either Netflix) wanted to make a difference and go for more. It is necessary? It’s useful? It seems not. Each episode is over an hour long, not to mention the last two which are going to be over two hours long. Luckily they go by quickly, they don’t feel so long, but you do notice that there are parts that are not completely necessary or situations that could have been resolved faster.
Why don’t they go long? With this we get into something that can be seen as an advantage or disadvantage, it is up to everyone’s taste. In Stranger Things 4 many things happen, there are many characters, subplots and locations that keep us attentive to every single thing and detail. As we told you above, there is a group that is in Hawkins, another that went to California and then we have hopper in Russia. And that we don’t even talk about Upside Down.
In each episode we have constant back and forth between these groups. We can spend 10 minutes in Hawkins, then go to 5 in California and then 15 in Russia. Each one with a different subplot, which we assume will connect in the end. What’s good about this? Meet the new characters that bring a certain freshness to the season (as was done in past seasons with Max Y Robin, for instance). On one hand we have Eddie in Hawkins and on the other to argyles (Edward Frank), the new friend of Jonathanin California.
Although the subplots of the Hawkins group and the one in California are not the same, they are quite related, unlike the one in Russia, which is quite sidelined. hopper he’s in prison and his whole story there seems like a completely different series, interesting, more mature and well-run, but that doesn’t connect as much with what’s happening with the boys.
Another thing that draws attention is the level of production in Stranger Things 4. The previous seasons had their thing, but the fourth is another level. How it looks, the amount of music there is, the details of the sets and all the different locations that we see are incredible and are far from the children’s story style of season 3. Which makes sense when we know that it is one of the seasons most expensive made on television of all time. The Wall Street Journal revealed that it has a budget per episode of 30 million dollars, when game of Thronesfor example, reached 15 million dollars per episode in its final season.
You can tell that time has passed, both physically (for the boys) and in the tone and way of telling the story, which is useful because Stranger Things 4 she is much more mature and grew up, just like her fans. So if you follow the series from the beginning and want to see how far this beautiful group of Hawkins goes, this season is going to catch you (more than the previous one for sure).
Friday comes the first part of Stranger Things 4 with 7 chapters and, luckily, five days later (on June 1) the final two chapters of that season will arrive, leaving us ready to say goodbye to Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Will (Noah Schnapp), Max (Sadie Sink), Joyce (Winona Ryder), Hopper (David Harbour) and the others in the fifth and final season.
